This package seems to be different from what Altlinux provides. What are the differences? This year I saw that AltLinux translates man-pages so possibly they have updated package. Do you know anything about that package? Why do you think we need this man-pages?
Comment 3 Sasha Medvedev 2008-07-26 18:01:41 UTC
This package contains manpages from ATL Linux, ASP Linux, and other sources. Files were collected in 2007. So I can try to update package if anybody is intrested in it.
A few worlds about why we need this package. I think if we have manpages-ru package in portage tree, it must be as complete and new as possible. The official manpages-ru project isn't active. And there is no any other translation project as I no. So to maintain this package we need to collect russian man pages from different source.

Comment 4 Pun 2008-08-06 06:32:42 UTC
This ebuild is even more important because the russian manpages that are in portage are mostly in KOI-8.
Comment 5 Peter Volkov (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-08-18 09:37:23 UTC
KOI8 or no, is not important. But yes, manpages-ru is quite out of date, so personally I'm interested in an updated version. But I'd like to see that package coming not in form of tarbal from unknown author but from some translation/maintenance project. In other case during fixing typos we'll end with a numerous patches which will be hard to maintain. I've mailed AltLinux team and we'll try to find out if they are interested in establishing such project. Also may be they'll need some help, then I'll tell you Sasha.

Ok. I've got opinion from AltLinux team. Currently they are not interested to create another small translation project, but they have ideas/goals to setup big translation project for all *nix software.

Again, I'm interested. But I think we should not include this package in form it is now. It contains different manpages which belong to different projects and all manpages besides manpages from man-pages (http://www.win.tue.nl/~aeb/linux/man/) should go away (like it was done for English version man-pages itself).

For example ssh.1 man page should belong to openssh project (or the project which was used as the source for that translation). Same stands for coreutils and different other man pages. It is some work, as currently coreutils don't have infrastructure to install translated manual pages (no traslations exists atm) so first step will be to contact upstream developer and discuss possibility of inclusion of this translation... And this is hardwork we could skip at the moment.

But if you take man-pages package itself and find most recent translations for manuals included there, then we can create and bundle tarbal for that translations. If you wish to do that or have questions just ask me here or if you prefer Russian languages you can find me at xmpp: pva@jabber.org

It looks like fedora guys and gals with afaik help from debian stated project to maintain Russian man pages: http://man-pages-ru.sourceforge.net/

We'll go with that man pages to the moment as they have good webpage and infrastructure to maintain translations.
