Description Rumi Szabolcs 2008-03-07 21:25:04 UTC
Currently Acrobat Reader is at version 8.1 and the LINGUAS variable installs
Korean, Japanese, Chinese etc. versions of the Reader itself but the Asian
font packs are in a separate ebuild called media-fonts/acroread-asianfonts.

These font packs are essential for viewing tech docs from various Korean,
Japanese, etc. manufacturers because many times they are using the English
characters embedded in a Korean, etc. font to write the English language
documentation so that even though they are not written in hangul/kanjis/etc.
but plain English alphabet they still cannot be displayed without these
asian fonts.

The asianfonts ebuild is currently at version 7.x which is officially
claimed to be incompatible with Reader 8.x and indeed installs in a directory
that is not appropriate for a Reader 8.x installation but only for a 7.x one.
The acroread ebuild also does not depend on acroread-asianfonts in any way.

I would like to propose that the two ebuilds should be merged and USE flags
like "fonts_jp", "fonts_ko", etc. should be added to install these additional
font packs as this would be more practical for the users and would force the
maintainer of the acroread ebuild to always update the font pack references
to versions compatible with the current Reader version.

There is also an external font pack having Hebrew, Arabic, Thai, etc. fonts
which could also be available for installation through portage.

If this cannot be done, maybe adding a USE flag "asianfonts" to the acroread
ebuild would be an alternative to pull in the acroread-asianfonts package
as a dependency which would help users to realize that they might need it,
and it should be kept updated with the Reader versions.

Reproducible: Always

Maybe you mean a URL like this:

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/acrrasianfontpack.html

From here I was able to download the following fontpacks (md5sum -b):

Nah, not really... I meant *direct* URLs to the fonts tarballs.

Linguas added, pull in media-fonts/acroread-asianfonts
