Okay, let's wait until newer portage is stable.
Sparc stable anyway. I already had to package.use.mask chicken for swig because chicken has no [~]sparc keyword. Thus just to give swig-1.3.33 a ~sparc keyword, I had to mask it's USE=chicken flag. That said, I've been using swig-1.3.33 on sparc since 24 November 2007.
portage-2.1.4.4 is stable, should we stabilize now?
