Compiles and tests with no errors on x86 and AMD64 here - checked resulting .so file with ldd and scanelf/readelf and can't see any unmet dependencies

That's because you have automake-1.9* installed; if fails without it. Really stupid idea to symlink something like this in tarball, needs eautoreconf.

$ readlink ./depcomp 
/usr/share/automake-1.9/depcomp

This issue is fixed in libproccpuinfo-0.0.7 (released today). The project is now using CMake.

fixed in 0.0.6.1, 0.0.7 doesn't use autotools anymore
