Description Hans Meine 2007-11-01 09:58:02 UTC
equery(0.1.4) d[epends] does not seem to differentiate between DEPEND and RDEPEND.

(I was trying to emerge mplayer with
USE="3dnow 3dnowext X aac aalib alsa arts cdparanoia cpudetection dga directfb dv dvb dvd encode esd fbcon gif gtk iconv ipv6 jpeg libcaca lirc live lzo mad mmx mmxext mp3 musepack nas opengl oss png quicktime real rtc samba sdl sse sse2 svga theora truetype unicode v4l v4l2 vidix vorbis win32codecs x264 xanim xv xvid -a52 (-altivec) -amrnb -amrwb -bidi -bindist -bl -cddb -cdio -custom-cflags -debug -doc -dts -enca -ftp -ggi -ivtv -jack -joystick -lame -livecd -md5sum -mp2 -nemesi -openal -pnm -pvr -radio -rar -speex -srt -ssse3 -teletext -tga -tivo -xinerama -xvmc -zoran" VIDEO_CARDS="vesa -mga -s3virge -tdfx"
which results in blocked packages. I expected equery to be a helpful tool in hunting down the blocking packages.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge xvid (yasm gets installed)
2. equery d yasm

Actual Results:
[ Searching for packages depending on yasm... ]
media-libs/xvid-1.1.3 (amd64? >=dev-lang/yasm-0.5.0)
                      (x86? >=dev-lang/yasm-0.5.0)

Expected Results:
Nothing.

Alternatively, maybe something like:
[ Searching for packages depending on yasm... ]
media-libs/xvid-1.1.3[RDEPEND] (amd64? >=dev-lang/yasm-0.5.0)
                               (x86? >=dev-lang/yasm-0.5.0)
Comment 1 Hans Meine 2007-11-01 10:04:44 UTC
Err.. the [RDEPEND] is illogical. But you get the point. Maybe [!RDEPEND], I don't know if there's a better term used by the portage developers already.
Comment 2 Steve L 2007-11-01 10:33:43 UTC
I think the additional ability would be a useful extension, but I am at a loss as to why you didn't get the info from portage directly?
eg:
[blocks B     ] <sys-fs/device-mapper-1.02.19-r1 (is blocking sys-fs/udev-114)
or:
[blocks B     ] <kde-base/kdesktop-3.5.6-r1 (is blocking kde-base/kdebase-kioslaves-3.5.7-r1)
[blocks B     ] <=kde-base/kmail-3.5.6-r1 (is blocking kde-base/libkdepim-3.5.7-r1)
Comment 3 Hans Meine 2007-11-01 12:22:41 UTC
Yes, the output of portage tells me which package blocks which, but note that neither x264-svn nor yasm were installed before this:

TuxOnStage:~ -> emerge -buvka --tree avidemux transcode mplayer xine-ui

These are the packages that would be merged, in reverse order:

[blocks B     ] <dev-lang/yasm-0.6.2 (is blocking media-libs/x264-svn-20070924)

Thus, portage should ideally see that yasm is only needed temporarily (in order to compile xvid), and unmerge it afterwards, if it blocks other needed packages. But that would be another bug report (and open to a loooong discussion).

This bug report is about the missing information on the solution: yasm is not in RDEPEND, but only in DEPEND, but neither emerge nor equery tell me about it.

Probably should be changed to WORKSFORME since this works for me. Previous comments seem to indicate the same.

My comment was supposed to be posted to a gltron bug... Not this one. Maybe a bugzilla bug?
