As root, on a terminal, type gdmsetup and check the users tab to see which users are included in the faces browser. Also, on the security tab, check the minimum uid allowed in the face browser. If you created a user with uid lower than the minimum allowed, it won't show in the face browser (I had this problem, I migrated from another linux distro, and my old uid was 500, when I migrated to gentoo, I didn't want to change the permissions of all my data partitions, so I forced my user to use uid 500 on gentoo).(In reply to comment #0)

Comment 2 rhywek 2007-11-13 21:37:59 UTC
I had the same problem. I had to add my user by hand using the gdmsetup utility. Now my configuration file (excluding comments and blank lines) looks as follows:

# grep '^[^#]' /etc/X11/gdm/custom.conf
[daemon]
[security]
[xdmcp]
[gui]
[greeter]
UseCirclesInEntry=true
Use24Clock=yes
Include=rhywek
GraphicalTheme=happygnome-list
GraphicalThemedColor=#56b02e
SoundOnLogin=false
[chooser]
[debug]
Enable=true
[servers]

Still adding the user by hand shouldn't be necessary, as the minimum uid is 1000 and my user has uid 1000. All users from /etc/passwd with uid>=1000 shoud be visible in the browser by default.

Marc G., please have a look at the following bug:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=199106

If you have thinkfinger-0.3 installed and you've changed the pam configuration to use it, then it's the same issue. But if you haven't done that, then it's different issue.

I have previously reported that I also have this problem, but it turns out I don't if I don't use thinkfinger. Please see the mentioned bug for details.
Comment 4 Marc Geerlings 2007-11-14 06:32:00 UTC
After the latest comment I switched the face browser on again with a theme and it works. I think the complete emerge -e system/world I did after another bug solved it.
