Hi, Here is an ebuild for the Bistream Vera fonts. See http://www.gnome.org/fonts/ for informations. We need to create a new license in the portage tree for this. A copy of the COPYRIGHT.TXT file to portage/licenses/Bistream should be enough I think. -- Thomas. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce:

Created attachment 10764 [details] licenses/Bitstream This is only a copy of the COPYRIGHT.TXT file, to include as a license into portage.
I think the fonts should be installed in /usr/share/fonts/vera, otherwise they aren't read by the default fonts.conf file and the local.conf should be automatically installed.
and don't forget the font cache rebuild (fc-cache)
Thanks for your comments Heinrich. - about the location of the fonts: I think both dirs are in the default "fonts.conf" path. But it's true that "/usr/share/fonts" would be better, as this fonts don't come with xfree. - about the "local.conf" installation: I don't think it's a good idea to merge this file, as it is not specific to this fonts. What I will do is merging a copy named "bitstream.conf", and display a message about what must be added to "fonts.conf" for including it. Or maybe the include directive could be added to the default "fonts.conf"? - about fc-cache: you're right, I will add this to the postinst message.

foser, according to the README on the website that I read last night, they recommend building xfree without xft2 built-in. Your thoughts before I unmask it?
oh and by the way, Heinrich and TGL, we're actually creating a media-fonts category in portage, just so you know.
Well, this was already added by earlier on. x11-misc/ttf-bitstream-vera (should be moved to media-fonts in time). I didn't put in to the mkfontdir stuff and all that, maybe because i'm Xft2 centered ;) But i don't think it is a good pay-off to have fonts depend on xfree just for this. Any further comments, suggestions/improvements before i close it ?
I think the "X" USE flag can help to solve the "xfree or not xfree" dilemma. I also think that the local.conf (vera.conf with my ebuild) for fontconfig is really needed. Few people know how to customize this stuff, it's too recent. And adding the suggested include directive in the default fonts.conf would be perfect, as it doesn't hurt even if the file is not present.
Created attachment 10817 [details] media-fonts/bitstream-vera/bitstream-vera-1.10.ebuild A last version of the ebuild, with use of the X flag, since it was written.
X sounds like a good flag yep. Currently i suggest at the end of the ebuild using fontconfig 2.1.94 which is in portage, it has the relevant bitstream vera lines already in it.
Hello, looks like the download url changed (and so did the package's name). new url is: http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/sources/ttf-bitstream-vera/1.10/ttf-bitstream-vera-1.10.tar.bz2 SRC_URI and the ebuild's name (or "unpack ${P}.tar.bz2") have to be changed accordingly... Regards, Daniel
ok, added ttf-bistream-vera-1.10-r1 which adds fonts.{dir, scale} if X in use. Please give it a try so i can unmask it.
Tested and approved. Thanks foser for your changes.
