Description trefoil 2007-09-12 20:15:32 UTC
I'm using a recently updated ~x86 system with XFCE 4.41. Everytime I try to leave X, the display freezes and all that is seen is a mouse cursor and background. I must ctrl-alt-delete, which successfully forces a system reboot. Instead, pressing the power button (I have acpid running) will cause some hard drive activity, but the machine will not then shut down. Ctrl-alt-backspace causes the same type of crash.

My previous version of xorg was 7.1. I've tried both with and without an xorg.conf file, with no noted difference. I'll attach my emerge --info and xorg log. tia

Reproducible: Always

Have you tried the masked 6.7.192 drivers? I have a Radeon X800 AGP and with that driver it runs without the problems you describe. Haven't tried the old drivers with xorg-server-1.4, though.
Comment 4 James 2007-09-14 17:49:33 UTC
I have a similar problem with my new install of xorg 7.3. I am using an older R128 fury card, but the server likewise crashes on shutdown. I tried both the 6.7.192 and the 6.6.3 drivers. I am running this on an athlon 900, so we may have a bad interaction with the athlon, I'm running the 6.6.3 drivers on my PIII dual system with no problems.

Good suggestion. I tried it and it doesn't fix the problem, and in addition it gives me choppy video. My card is a Radeon 9600XT. #4: It seems doubtful, but I'll try recompiling the video drivers and xorg-server with -march=i686 -O2 and report back if that fixes the problem.
Comment 7 Alan Hourihane 2007-09-19 19:26:53 UTC
The Xorg.log doesn't show anything, but have you checked the kernel logs ??

if you can ssh in over the network and type 'dmesg' and see if there's anything interesting there.
Comment 8 Alan Hourihane 2007-09-19 19:28:29 UTC
Also, it might be worth setting a ulimit for a core dump, and then running it through with gdb, such as...

gdb -c core.xxxx Xorg

then type 'backtrace' in gdb and attach that dump here.
Comment 9 trefoil 2007-10-19 17:11:04 UTC
Hello, unfortunately I don't have another machine to try the SSH thing. I still experience this problem with a fully up-to-this-date ~x86 machine, using the latest hard-masked xf86-video-ati driver.

Comment 10 trefoil 2007-11-22 02:57:03 UTC
This problem has gone away for me. Perhaps it was because I didn't have dbus / hald loaded on boot. In any case, it probably shouldn't crash if those are missing.
Comment 11 trefoil 2007-12-14 18:12:37 UTC
Just noticed by chance that this is a dupe of bug #195886. It is indeed caused by dbus not being loaded at boot, at least for me, and is fixed in the upcoming release.
