Description Stephen Summerfield 2007-09-07 10:42:46 UTC
I updated openssh today:

[ebuild U ] net-misc/openssh-4.7_p1 [4.6_p1-r3] USE="pam tcpd -X -X509 -chroot -hpn -kerberos -ldap -libedit (-selinux) -skey -smartcard -static" 0 kB

However after merging config (nothing new so I retained existing config file) I tried restarting with:

/etc/init.d/sshd restart

* Stopping sshd ...                                 [ !! ]

Wouldn't restart. Checked log files could not see anything and tried:

/etc/init.d/sshd --verbose restart

and that didn't show anything new. Also tried modifying the command in /etc/init.d/sshd that stops the daemon, removed --quiet flag but nothing more was displayed.

I had the same behaviour on another Gentoo box.

I re-emerged the previous version and I can restart that version (4.6_p1-r3).

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge -u openssh
2. /etc/init.d/sshd restart

Actual Results:
/etc/init.d/sshd restart

no longer able to restart sshd daemon.

Expected Results:
/etc/init.d/sshd restart

would restart sshd using the new binary.

Well, works fine here. See the syslog for hints; also note that emerge --info output is required for bugs.

As requested (I've provided it for both systems):

Again, did you see the syslog (/var/log/messages) for any errors?

I checked the logs on both systems but cannot see anything untoward (actually no ssh messages due to the attempted restart, but can see ssh login messages).
/var/log/messages
/var/log/syslog

On system 2, having reverted back to 4.6_p1-r3, I again updated to 4.7_p1 and strangely that is ok now - I can restart sshd without problems.

However on system 1, I did the same but it still had the same problem.

I tried putting some 'echo's in the init script to see where it was failing and lo and behold restart just worked. Reverting the script and it still works. No idea why this was either happening or how it fixed itself. All rather worrying as the system involved is a remote system with only ssh access so if I lose that I have a long drive ahead...

At least it seems ok now.

Thanks for your attention.
