Description DEMAINE Benoît-Pierre, aka DoubleHP 2007-08-15 16:07:59 UTC
At the end of a successfull emerge, emerge notifies about etc files to be updates.

I think this should be followed by 3 colorfull messages informing about notices:
- a green reporting there are messages (if any)
- a yellow to report about warnings (if any)
- a red reporting about important messages (if any)

Too many people have problems that have fixes in enotices; too many people fill forums and IRC with trivial bugs, and too many people forget to read enotices ... and too many roots are not even aware they exist !

I remember my yought when I was frustrated to see those messages fade away in the terminal history, and that it took me weeks before I understand and discover those few tools to get them back.

I think the enotice archive should be a default feature of the distro, and that a successfull emerge should show a colorfull warning about them:
- that there are some to read
- how to read them

as for etc-update ...
