I have the exact same thing with app-cdr/k3b-1.0.2, AMD64, 2.6.21-gentoo-r2.

k3b-1.0.2 doesn't hang my amd64 system.

I don't have the sr* dev nodes around here. Did you enable the SCSI cdrom support on the kernel - grep CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SR /usr/src/linux/.config? If you have and unless you do have a SCSI cdrom, try taking it out and running k3b again.

Well, you have a hardware problem. Information at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machine_Check_Exception might help you diagnose this issue.

There's nothing Gentoo can help with, sorry.

It seems fixed in 2.6.22-rc7
