could just make depend on >=2.17 However, my understanding from having my own bugs invalidated is that Gentoo policy is that ebuilds may NOT depend upon core compiler/system util versions, etc. My guess is some dev. will invalidate this :).
i'm guessing the new binutils will be stabilized like they have for alpha/arm/ia64/mips/ppc/ppc64/sparc unless there's something specific to x86 and amd64 that's stopping it.

amd64, x86 - any special trouble w/ stabilizing 2.17? Been done everywhere else.
it's being discussed in http://bugs.gentoo.org/134112 basically devs are tossing up going straight to 2.17 or backporting some security patch.

There's bug 149398
(In reply to comment #8) > There's bug 149398 Shrug; that bug didn't move anywhere for 9 months and noone of embedded folks seems to be disturbed about it.
Please try mplayer-1.0.20070622-r1 with -ssse3

binutils-2.17 stable on amd64 and x86
removing all remaining arches, as all have binutils 2.17 stable. Closing.
