After not touching my Blade for a few months and trying to upgrade now I encountered some major problem: Fatal server error: xf86MapPciMem: Could not mmap PCI memory [base=0x426000,hostbase=0x426000,size=2000] (Inappropriate ioctl for device) This happens no matther which video-driver is selected (I tried ati, radeon and vga). Searching Google for it gave some hints, nearly all of them related to Sparc with Debian/Ubuntu: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/99221 http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-402688.html http://www.mail-archive.com/debian-bugs-rc@lists.debian.org/msg100718.html https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7248 emerge --info: -------------- Portage 2.1.2.7 (default-linux/sparc/sparc64/2007.0, gcc-4.1.2, glibc-2.5-r3, 2.6.21-gentoo-r2 sparc64) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.21-gentoo-r2 sparc64 sun4u Gentoo Base System version 1.6.15 Timestamp of tree: Thu, 31 May 2007 23:50:01 +0000 distcc 2.18.3 sparc-unknown-linux-gnu (protocols 1 and 2) (default port 3632) [disabled] ccache version 2.3 [enabled] dev-lang/python: 2.3.5-r2, 2.4.4-r4 dev-python/pycrypto: 2.0.1-r5 dev-util/ccache: 2.3 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.17 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.61 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r2, 1.10 sys-devel/binutils: 2.17 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.3.16 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.22 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.19.2-r2 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="sparc" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="sparc-unknown-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-O2 -mcpu=ultrasparc" CHOST="sparc-unknown-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/3.3/env /usr/kde/3.3/share/config /usr/kde/3.3/shutdown /usr/kde/3.4/env /usr/kde/3.4/share/config /usr/kde/3.4/shutdown /usr/lib/mozilla/defaults/pref /usr/share/X11/xkb /usr/share/config" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/env.d /etc/gconf /etc/terminfo" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -mcpu=ultrasparc" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="candy ccache distlocks keepwork metadata-transfer sandbox sfperms strict userpriv usersandbox" GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://ftp6.uni-muenster.de/pub/linux/distributions/gentoo/ ftp://sunsite.informatik.rwth-aachen.de/pub/Linux/gentoo ftp://sunsite.dk/mirrors/gentoo ftp://ftp.tu-clausthal.de/pub/linux/gentoo http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo" LINGUAS="de" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --delete-after --stats --timeout=180 --exclude=/distfiles --exclude=/local --exclude=/packages --filter=H_**/files/digest-*" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.de.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="bitmap-fonts cli cracklib cups dri fortran gdbm gpm iconv isdnlog libg++ midi mudflap nptl nptlonly openmp pcre ppds pppd reflection session sparc spl truetype-fonts type1-fonts unicode xorg" ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS="adpcm alaw asym copy dmix dshare dsnoop empty extplug file hooks iec958 ioplug ladspa lfloat linear meter mulaw multi null plug rate route share shm softvol" ELIBC="glibc" INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse" KERNEL="linux" LCD_DEVICES="bayrad cfontz cfontz633 glk hd44780 lb216 lcdm001 mtxorb ncurses text" LINGUAS="de" USERLAND="GNU" VIDEO_CARDS="mach64 r128 radeon" Unset: CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, INSTALL_MASK, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, MAKEOPTS, PORTAGE_COMPRESS, PORTAGE_COMPRESS_FLAGS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS X -scanpci: ----------- Probing for PCI devices (Bus:Device:Function) (0:0:0) Sun Microsystems Computer Corp. Okay, I found something helpful: The bug seems to be related to sysfs and xorgs behaviour when using it. http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=422077 Scroll down to Jim Watson's reply dated Sat, 05 May 2007 08:08:09. So I unmounted /sys and tried again -- et voila, it works. Probably something for the sparc-faq on g.o?
Another reply from me: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=167052
Let's dupe this...
