I just upgraded to sys-apps/baselayout-2.0.0_alpha1 and starting having this problem (it did not occur under baselayout-1).

When I run /etc/init.d/courier-authlib start, I get this response:
 * Starting courier-authlib: authdaemond ...                             [ ok ]

But, when I run rc-status, I get this:
 courier-authlib                                                  [  crashed  ]

Also, I think the /etc/init.d/courier-authlib script needs a name parameter added to the start-stop-daemon call, as it seems to be required by baselayout-2.

This Bug seems with baselayout 2.0.0 final fixed?
I am not able to reproduce this here with courier-authlib-0.60.6

Closing, as Conrad said seems it was fixed with baselayout 2.0
