Description Chris Yu 2007-04-10 10:10:55 UTC
emerge mplayer, it doesn't detect DPMS. but run configure in mplayer src folder, it does.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.ebuild /usr/portage/media-video/mplayer/mplayer-1.0_rc2_pre20070321-r4.ebuild compile
2.check configure info, it says "Checking for DPMS ... no"
3.
Actual Results:
Cannot disable DPMS while mplayer running, monitor off after 5mins

Expected Results:
Mplayer detect DPMS properly.

If change line 3932 from "xdpms4=no" to "xdpms4=yes" in configure, then compile mplayer. Mplayer works properly with DPMS. Verified by run xset -q.

I *cannot* confirm this, I just rebuilt mplayer and I see:

Checking for DPMS ... yes (using Xdpms 4)

Yah, configure doesnt even have an option for DPMS (unless its hidden). I imagine youve got some X11 borkage going on there.

There is no cmd line option for DPMS option, configure script checks DPMS at about line 3932.

For me, the problem is, if invoke configure from emerge, cannot find DPMS, but run configure mannuly, it does.

Thanks.

It seems the problem is also not solved with mplayer-1.0.20070427.

I looked at the configure script of the latter and found the cause:
configure wants to link with libXdpms which apparently does not exist in current Xorg. It seems that the correct lib is libXext.

Executing
  sed -ie s/-lXdpms/-lXext/ configure
at the end of the unpack phase solves the problem for me.

indeed

What made you drawing this conclusion?

Yes, this lets mplayer find some kind of DPMS-support. But I'm not sure if this is correct. With your sed-line mplayer doesn't find the DPMS version that it would find when manually running configure (without portage):

output during emerge without your sed-line:
Checking for DPMS ... no

output during emerge with your sed-line:
Checking for DPMS ... yes (using Xdpms 3)

expected output which can be seen when running configure manually:
Checking for DPMS ... yes (using Xdpms 4)

Even running the whole ./configure-line manually with all options, that are used by the ebuild, detects Xdpms 4. So from this observation I would say this is an error in the ebuild or in portage.
On the other hand, I have this problem only on my ~x86 machines. My three stable x86 machines don't show this problem with current stable AND unstable x86 mplayer ebuild. So the problem could also be caused by some unstable xorg-package but that would not explain why running configure manually on my ~x86 machines detects Xdpms 4...

Cheers
Poly-C

I had looked at the configure.log, and it failed to link a program with -lXdpms (because the library does exist). This program essentially contained the line #include <dpms.h> and one function call (the name of the header-file might be wrong: It is from memory, since I have no gentoo here in the moment). The only package on my system which provides a header-file with this name is libXext, and the only library which this package contains is libXext. Moreover, the mentioned program can resolve the function call if compiled with -lXext.

I had a similar phenomenon, but different: Without my sed-line, mplayer did not find any dpms support (no matter whether compiled manually or with portage), with this sed-line, it did. However, when run manually (with the sed-line), it finds support for Xdpms 4, when run from portage, it finds support for Xdpms 3 (as in your case). Since both worked, I didn't care.

> On the other hand, I have this problem only on my ~x86 machines.

I have the above problem on x86 and on amd64 (in both cases, some ~ARCH packages are installed also, but X is completely ARCH, IIRC).
