Description Tiburcio da Silva 2007-04-08 19:29:24 UTC
Whenever GLflux, Flipscreen3D or Antspotlight are run, X lockups or gets really slow and bloated, the keyboard doesnt work and the mouse becomes really heavy. After a few seconds or if i hit the power button once (to properly shutdown the system), the leds on the keyboard go flashing, like a kernel panic or something. It happens every single time and only with those three screensavers.
I can get rid of the problem by manually removing:

/usr/lib64/misc/xscreensaver/gflux
/usr/lib64/misc/xscreensaver/flipscreen3d
/usr/lib64/misc/xscreensaver/antspotlight

The problem lies in updating the xscreensaver package, which will probably reinstall those bugged savers and make my system crash again. Maybe those savers should be excluded from the default stable package, allowing users to add them as they please or feel safe.
Thank you very much.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open xfce4 settings manager
2. Hit screensaver
3. Choose any of "Glflux", "Flipscreen3d", "Antspotlight"

Actual Results:
X locks up, keyboard doesn't respond, mouse goes really heavy, kernelpanic(?)

Expected Results:
Run a preview of any of the screensavers.

I'm running gentoo linux 2006.1 up-to-date and amd64-stable. The desktop environment is xfce-4.4 + xscreensaver-4.24 + x11-drm-20060608 + via opensource x11 and kernel drivers, no proprietary binaries whatsoever.

Can you reproduce this w/ >=x11-misc/xscreensaver-5.01-r2 ?

Yes, the exact same thing happens with x11-misc/xscreensaver-5.01-r3
What should i do?

Thanks.

They work fine here with Open Source Radeon, Mesa DRI. It's likely a problem with your drivers or possibly OpenGL code used in these savers. Either way you have to report this to Unichrome and/or xscreensaver upstream. It's unlikely we can do anything about this.

Indeed, they also work fine with i810 and mesa DRI on my Dell Latitude D510. I'll post a bug report on xscreensaver bugzilla and link to this bug.
Thanks again.

There is a FAQ entry on xscreensaver's website that blames X.org for any server crash. I've sent an email to xscreensaver devs and also posted a bug at freedesktop's bugzilla. I hope it helps.
Thanks again.
