It seems that it causes infinite recursion, thus leading to high load, creating a lot of temporary files and crashing the system or making /sbin/depscan.sh to die unexpectedly while trying to cache service dependencies. This also leads to all kinds of problems caused by /sbin/depscan.sh failing to work properly while this package is installed or until removing /etc/init.d/alsasound. Can you perhaps try w/ baselayout-1.13.0_alpha12? You'll need to unmask sys-apps/makedev as well (plus media-gfx/splashutils if you are using bootsplash). It works just fine here.
