Any application that attempts to use the XV extension locks up the xserver hard (100% CPU usage, frozen display). Problem occurs with both 8.32.5 and 8.33.6-r1 and xorg-server 1.1.1-r1, 1.1.1-r4, or 1.2.0-r1. Hardware: IBM Thinkpad R52 (1849-4WU) ATI Technologies Inc M22 [Radeon Mobility M300] rev 0, Mem @ 0xc0000000/27, 0xb0100000/16, I/O @ 0x3000/8 Running at 1400x1050, depth 24. Pixmap format is 32 bpp. Kernel: 2.6.16-gentoo-r13 Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Run any program that uses the xv extension (xine, mplayer) Actual Results: X server CPU usage goes to 100% and desktop is completely dead except for mouse cursor. I imagine it's an upstream bug in ATI's stuff and there's nothing that can be done about it. But, I thought I'd at least document it.
Attach xorg.conf here, also post emerge --info.
I also have this same problem, using ati drivers 8.33.6-r1 I also am using a Radeon Mobility M300 (M22) on a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop. Running at 1920x1200, depth 24, 32bpp 2.6.18-gentoo-r3 Running vlc/mplayer using xv extension causes the same hard lockup, but if i change the extension, everything runs fine.

If, by "change the extension" you mean use x11/SHM or something other than the "xv" extension for video output, then that's what I saw also. Using "mplayer -vo x11" worked fine.

Using "mplayer > -vo x11" worked fine. > Yes, currently I have been using the X11 or OpenGL output modes, and no crash at all, but the quality isnt as good, but its not crashing. Mplayer works if do "mplayer -vo x11" but if its using the xv codec, its crashing and burning.
This problem seems to be resolved when I updated my ATI drivers to the latest drivers. ( x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.34.8)

Try with some newer version, please.
