Recently net-dialup/ppp changed (from 2.4.3 to 2.4.4) and kernel module moved to new directory. net-dialup/rp-pppoe does not care about this and tries to load 2.4.3's module anyway which fails.
a) net.ppp0 starts successfully allthough file not found occurs while trying to access .../2.4.3/rp-pppoe.so
b) rp-pppoe depends on ppp and should be re-emerged with it, esp. when using --deep
c) write 100 times «Don't fuck user's config»
