When I discussed this on the gentoo-users list, there were others using emacs who did not have this problem. Whether they had the USE flag on is unknown.

In any case, please focus on the line
       Cannot open load file: /usr/share/emacs/site-list/site-gentoo
because there appears to be a simple mispelling: it should be "site-lisp"
not "site-list".

Comment 2 Ulrich Müller gentoo-dev 2007-02-19 10:15:50 UTC
Can you try attached patch? It prevents Emacs from calling the site initialization.

I don't know how to apply this. It appears to patch something that's included
in the tar file I find in distfiles. Should I untar-apply-retar and try the ebuild? Won't that screw up checksums?

I'm guessing there's another way, but I don't know what it is.

You may do the following (assuming your Portage version and variables are as in the "emerge --info" above):

$ ebuild /usr/portage/sys-devel/gettext/gettext-0.16.1 unpack
$ patch -p1 -d /var/tmp/portage/gettext-0.16.1/work/gettext-0.16.1 <patchfile
$ ebuild /usr/portage/sys-devel/gettext/gettext-0.16.1 install

If applying the patch does not work for you, feel free to send me an e-mail (since Bugzilla is not exactly a help forum).

Argh. There should of course be an ".ebuild" at the end of the file name.

Base-system: Any objections against the Emacs team fixing this bug?
Comment 9 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2007-05-19 04:47:42 UTC
is that a hack or a fix ? in other words, can you push this upstream please

Reported upstream in March already, see <http://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?19444>.
Comment 11 Ulrich Müller gentoo-dev 2007-05-19 17:19:42 UTC
E-mailed upstream (i.e. Bruno Haible) directly, and he rejected the patch. His suggestion is that we should set an environment variable instead:
   EMACS="/usr/bin/emacs -no-site-file"

This could be done in src_compile, or it could be given as argument to econf.
Comment 12 Ulrich Müller gentoo-dev 2007-07-06 23:23:44 UTC
Emacs support has been split off from gettext into a separate package app-emacs/po-mode.

The problem should be fixed there.
