Geforce4 MX440 and other older Nvidia videocards are now unsupported by >=x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-1.0.9746, because Nvidia drops support of these.

The full list of unsupported cards is available at http://www.suse.de/~sndirsch/nvidia-installer-HOWTO.html#23
It is not good idea to use x11-drivers/nvidia-legacy-drivers-1.0.7184 to drive these cards.

The temporary solution:
 echo ">=x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-1.0.9746" >> /etc/portage/package.mask

So the another branch of nvidia-legacy-drivers v 1.0.9xxx should be added to portage tree for support of these cards.
