after every sync, i must delete the file "/usr/portage/profiles/updates/4Q-2006" or i get

once i delete this file everything works again.
doing an "lsof | grep 4Q" produces no results.

yep, updating to the current version fixed this, although it was mildly annoying that something changed to break an older version of portage like that.
