Description FieldySnuts 2006-11-26 08:35:01 UTC
net-wireless/wpa_supplicant-0.5.6 fails to connect to any AP. No configuration files were changed from the previous version, 0.5.5. More curiously is the fact that after reverting back to 0.5.5, I still see this same issue. Here is what happens after moving to 0.5.6, and using 0.5.6 or 0.5.5:

# /etc/init.d/net.eth1 start
 * Starting eth1
 *   Changing MAC address of eth1 ...                                                       [ ok ] *     changed to 00:13:CE:B7:CC:CA
 *   Starting wpa_supplicant on eth1 ...                                                    [ ok ] *   Starting wpa_cli on eth1 ...                                                           [ ok ] *     Failed to configure eth1 in the background                                           [ !! ]

I find no errors whatsoever in logs. Another user in #gentoo mentioned that he got it to work with wpa_gui but I don't know what that is or how to use it. Hopefully he will comment on this bug.

I am not sure where to go next, and what information to add to this bug, so please do let me know what to provide.

I have a similar issue using wpa_supplicant-0.5.6 together with madwifi-ng-0.9.2, though I don't get any error messages:

nexus ~ # /etc/init.d/net.ath0 start
 * Starting ath0
 * Loading networking modules for ath0
 * modules: apipa arping ccwgroup macchanger macnet rename wpa_supplicant essidnet iptunnel iproute2 pppd system dhcpcd ip6to4
 *       wpa_supplicant provides wireless
 *       iproute2 provides interface
 *       pppd provides ppp
 *       dhcpcd provides dhcp
 *   Configuring ath0 for MAC address 00:30:4F:39:29:1D ...          [ ok ]
 *   Starting wpa_supplicant on ath0 ...                             [ ok ]
 *   Starting wpa_cli on ath0 ...                                    [ ok ]
 *     Waiting for association                                       [ ok ]
 *     Backgrounding ...
nexus ~ # /etc/init.d/net.ath0 status
 * status:  inactive

Just like the bug reporter I don't understand why reverting to wpa_supplicant-0.5.5 didn't resolve the problem... I even tried to reload the madwifi kernel modules.

Using wpa_gui I managed to get an association manually with both wpa_supplicant 0.5.5 and 0.5.6.

Heh. INVALID ;)

 * WARNING: your old configuration file /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
 * needs to be moved to /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
Comment 3 FieldySnuts 2006-11-26 08:56:38 UTC
Yeah comment #2 poster just caught that. Once again, it would be nice if such warnings came AFTER the emerge was done of more than one of item, but i know this has been gone over and over (and there is a glep, #43 I think, for such a thing).

My appologies. Followed the warning and all works now, thanks!

Invalid due to failing to miss warnings.
