Description ivo welch 2006-10-16 17:55:57 UTC
Let me be complete. (Error message from X.org has changed a little. Result is the same: a version mismatch error.)

[0] this all happened after the upgrade from Xorg 7.0 to 7.1. (Thus, I first tried to move to 2.6.19-rc2, and see if it fixed it. It had other problems with the video driver, so I filed a report, and reverted back. This is the report.)

*  x11-base/xorg-server
      Latest version available: 1.1.1-r1
      Latest version installed: 1.1.1-r1

*  x11-base/xorg-x11
      Latest version available: 7.1
      Latest version installed: 7.1
      Size of files: 0 kB

      Description: An X11 implementation maintained by the X.Org Foundation (meta package)

[1] rebuild kernel 2.6.18 from scratch and clean, reboot it.

[2] re-emerge ati-drivers 8.29.6.  successful compile (unlike under kernel 2.6.19).

[3] modprobe radeon and drm. successful insertion:

# lsmod
Module                  Size  Used by
radeon                108832  0
drm                    71464  1 radeon

[4] the Xorg.0.log error seems to suggest that something was not build correctly when I went to xorg 7.1, see below. (I tried to re-emerge xorg-x11 and xorg-server, but this did not seem to redo it all--finished too quickly. How do I rebuild all xorg-x11 related packages?)

[5] the xorg.conf file was from the previous version, and worked. driver is "radeon".

[6] the complete Xorg.0.log is at the URL http://welch.econ.brown.edu/temp/Xorg.0.log.

erm ati-drivers has nothing to do with radeon, that's xf86-video-ati - do you have the problem with both drivers and did you remerge whatever driver you're using _after_ the upgrade to xorg 7.1?
BTW RC kernels like to break external stuff like ati-drivers

aha...another wasteful package on my system!!! :-)

I am using kernel vanilla-sources.

my video driver is specified in the xorg.conf file as "radeon". if this is not the ati driver, then I presume it must be the radeon driver that is shipping with the xorg 7.1 distribution, and thus should have been updated?! how would I force a rebuild of it? (I did a re-emerge of xorg-server 1.1.1-r1.)

Sorry that my error isn't more informative, but staring at
 (EE) module ABI major version (0) doesn't match the server's version (1)
 (II) UnloadModule: "radeon"
 (II) Unloading /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.so
 (EE) Failed to load module "radeon" (module requirement mismatch, 0)
makes it not easy to figure out what to force a rebuild on.

help and advice appreciated.

regards,

/iaw

Did you recompile xf86-video-ati? And which version is that? (Reopen the bug if needed, don't file duplicates.)
