The .bmp provided with the game maps #FF00FF to alpha, but this is not used in menus. A simple convert gives you a .xpm file which works properly. I'm attaching the desktop file and the xpm.

this wasn't done before cause we can't just convert icon and redistribute it
see here: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=111143
If I created a SVG icon instead and rendered it to a PNG/XPM, would that be acceptable?
No. It is not acceptable to redistribute property which is under a license that forbids it. You cannot modify anything from Id Software and redistribute it, except for the items they've released under the GPL.
i think he just offered not "converting/modifying" but "creating from scratch" new nice svg icon for q4
I don't see the point. Updatream provides an icon. Best to take it up with them.
How about using the Quake *2* icon for Quake 4, from /usr/portage/games-fps/quake2-icculus/files/quake2.xpm? It looks almost identical, and presumably is GPL-2 to exist there. Having a pink icon (as shown in Gnome 2.16) for a game that doesn't involve fluffy little ponies is just plain wrong ;)
Feel free to take it up with Id.
