Previously I had followed the Gentoo guide to upgrading GCC from 3.4.4-r1 to 4.1.1-r1, then run env-update and revdep-rebuild (which found nothing to do) and rebooted.

Not sure what to check next, so I'm currently remerging kdelibs and kmail.
