When I try to start gvim, it errors out with this error message: Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion Warning: Unable to load any usable fontset Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion Warning: Unable to load any usable fontset Error: Aborting: no fontset found What font is it trying to load? I don't have a ~/.vimrc, ~/.gvimrc and also no /etc/vim/vimrc.local or /etc/vim/gvimrc.local. /etc/vim/vimrc and /etc/vim/gvimrc are the default files. app-editors/gvim-7.0.91 app-editors/vim-7.0.91 app-editors/vim-core-7.0.91 alexander@blatt /etc/vim $ emerge --info Portage 2.1.1 (default-linux/x86/2006.1, gcc-4.1.1, glibc-2.4-r3, 2.6.17-suspend2-r6.044.no-kernel-alsa i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.17-suspend2-r6.044.no-kernel-alsa i686 Intel(R) Celeron(R) M processor 1.50GHz Gentoo Base System version 1.12.5 Last Sync: Thu, 14 Sep 2006 19:50:01 +0000 ccache version 2.4 [enabled] app-admin/eselect-compiler: [Not Present] dev-lang/python: 2.4.3-r3 dev-python/pycrypto: 2.0.1-r5 dev-util/ccache: 2.4-r5 dev-util/confcache: [Not Present] sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.18.1 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.60 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r2 sys-devel/binutils: 2.17 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.3.13-r3 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.22 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.17 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86 ~x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-O2 -mtune=pentium-m -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/3.5/env /usr/kde/3.5/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/shutdown /usr/share/X11/xkb /usr/share/config" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/env.d /etc/env.d/java/ /etc/gconf /etc/java-config/vms/ /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/terminfo" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -mtune=pentium-m -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" DISTDIR="/Gentoo/Portage/distfiles" EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS="--alphabetical" FEATURES="autoconfig buildpkg ccache collision-protect distlocks metadata-transfer sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS=" http://mirrors.sec.informatik.tu-darmstadt.de/gentoo/ http://ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/gentoo/ ftp://ftp.tu-clausthal.de/pub/linux/gentoo/ http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/gentoo/ ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/gentoo http://distfiles.gentoo.org/ " LANG="de_DE.UTF-8" LINGUAS="de" PKGDIR="/Gentoo/Portage/packages" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --delete-after --stats --timeout=180 --exclude='/distfiles' --exclude='/local' --exclude='/packages'" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/Gentoo/Portage/build" PORTDIR="/Gentoo/Portage/tree" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/Gentoo/Portage/local-tree/misc" SYNC="rsync://rsync.de.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 alsa berkdb bitmap-fonts cli crypt dlloader dri elibc_glibc esd fortran gdbm gnome gstreamer hal input_devices_evdev input_devices_keyboard input_devices_mouse isdnlog kdeenablefinal kdehiddenvisibility kernel_linux libedit libg++ linguas_de ncurses nls nptl nptlonly pcre perl ppds pppd python readline reflection session spl ssl tcpd truetype-fonts type1-fonts udev unicode userland_GNU video_cards_fbdev video_cards_vesa video_cards_vga video_cards_via xorg zlib" Unset: CTARGET, INSTALL_MASK, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, MAKEOPTS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS

Hmmm...
H
Hä? "Resolved"? I don't think so.
Hmmm indeed, this bugzilla habit of jumping on next open bug in the list is annoying like hell, sorry.
No problem. My locale is: alexander@blatt /Gentoo $ locale LANG=de_DE.UTF-8 LC_CTYPE="de_DE.UTF-8" LC_NUMERIC="de_DE.UTF-8" LC_TIME="de_DE.UTF-8" LC_COLLATE="de_DE.UTF-8" LC_MONETARY="de_DE.UTF-8" LC_MESSAGES="de_DE.UTF-8" LC_PAPER="de_DE.UTF-8" LC_NAME="de_DE.UTF-8" LC_ADDRESS="de_DE.UTF-8" LC_TELEPHONE="de_DE.UTF-8" LC_MEASUREMENT="de_DE.UTF-8" LC_IDENTIFICATION="de_DE.UTF-8" LC_ALL= I haven't got a ~/.Xdefaults file.
With LANG=C LC_ALL=C gvim I can start gvim just fine. Please notice, that I had USE=-gtk set when I built gvim. When I set USE=gtk, I can start gvim also with my default locale.
Hmm... I get the feeling that the Athena toolkit isn't that good about handling UTF8, and that that is throwing it off. Try running it as: LANG="de_DE" LC_ALL="de_DE" gvim And see if that works properly.
Hmm, I haven't heard anything from the reporter in a month, and I can't think of anything more helpful to suggest. All I can think is that the basic X toolkit can't cope with UTF8, so either use LANG="de_DE" LC_ALL="de_DE" gvim, or use the gtk+ version instead.
I have the same problem. The solution I'm using is to run gvim as: LC_ALL="en_US" gvim I don't have USE=gtk but USE=gtk2.
