I have a issuse with nis, it causes shutdown hang at saving random seed, it doesn't happen when nis isn't installed. I've spent alot of time fiddling, switching the order of nis and files in nsswatch.conf stopped portmap hanging of startup. I read in another bug report to try stopping net.lo exiting, but i don't know how to do this. Thanks Mel

Upgrade your baselayout to latest stable, upgrade your net-nds/ypbind to latest stable if you have not done so yet, try again.
Right, thats done it, I reinstalled the stage 3 tarball and gentoo sources. Then recompiled the kernel. And re-emerged ypbind. I have another two boxes with the same problem, so I'm going narrow the problem down a little more. I guess what ever the problem was, it's now resolved in the new base-layout. Thanks!
