While running its ebuild, I get: checking X11/Xft/XftFreetype.h usability... no checking X11/Xft/XftFreetype.h presence... no checking for X11/Xft/XftFreetype.h... no configure: error: pangoxft Pango backend found, but Xft not found !!! ERROR: x11-libs/gtk+-2.0.6-r3 failed. !!! Function econf, Line 11, Exitcode 1 !!! econf failed If any other info is needed, please let me know. I'll be glad to help.
post the config.log file from the build directory and `emerge info`

and if you try a newer gtk+ ? It looks like your pango (which version?) is built with Xft2 support and gtk+-2.0 doesn't support that. Use gtk+-2.2.x.
Pango version 1.0.5. Compiling gtk+ 2.2 right know.
compiling suggests you are beyond the configure stages, wonder why you're using these kinda old versions ? Are you non-x86 ?
Yeap. I'm on sparc. I noticed a couple of hours ago that the gtk+ 2.2 packages are masked on sparc and right know I'm testing this packages to ask sparc developers to add a keyword.
configure: error: pangoxft Pango backend found, but Xft not found !!! ERROR: x11-libs/gtk+-2.2.0 failed. :(
ok let's get this from the ground up, best is to use pango-1.2 with gtk+-2.2 , this also should install xft-2 and fontconfig . You might want to remove all of these packages first to make sure you start -sorta- clean.
