If one runs Xine from a directory that you don't have the permissions necessary to be in, then it causes an infinite number of error boxes to open (or so it seems) very quickly. One way to easily cause this is as follows (though other ones with changing directory permissions are also applicable): From console, before starting X, log in as root su into a user from the root's home. (su username) startx From now on, when you open a terminal, you will be in /root instead of your user's home initally (or, at the very least, I don't start off in $HOME). Run xine. Choose to open a file, and Xine should go into an infinite loop as it does not have permission to read in the directory it was started from. This behavior is probably undesirable, even if the setup very uncommon. I am running Xine 0.99.4-r5.
xine-ui version? emerge --info?
When Xine attempts to read an unreadable directory at all, apparently, it displays this bug. The setup I previously believed necessary is not. As user, merely attempting to access /root from the GUI causes this bug. xine-ui version was 0.99.4-r5 at first reporting (the most recent stable), as stated in the original post, but I upgraded to 0.99.4-r6 and the bug still remains. emerge --info is below: Portage 2.0.54-r2 (default-linux/x86/2006.0, gcc-3.4.5, glibc-2.3.6-r4, 2.6.17-gentoo i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.17-gentoo i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz Gentoo Base System version 1.12.0 dev-lang/python: 2.4.2 dev-python/pycrypto: 2.0.1-r5 dev-util/ccache: [Not Present] dev-util/confcache: [Not Present] sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.17 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r7 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r1 sys-devel/binutils: 2.16.1 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.3.13-r2 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.22 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.11-r2 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-march=pentium4 -O2 -pipe" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/lib/X11/xkb /usr/share/X11/xkb" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-march=pentium4 -O2 -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig distlocks sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://distfiles.gentoo.org http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/gentoo" LANG="en_US.utf8" LC_ALL="en_US.UTF8" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.namerica.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 X a52 aac acpi aim alsa apache2 apm asf audiofile automount avi bash-completion berkdb bidi bitmap-fonts bzip2 cdr cj k cli crypt cups curl dri dts dvd dvdr dvdread emboss encode exif expat fam firefox foomaticdb fortran fuse gd gdbm gif glut g nome gpm gstreamer gtk gtk2 gtkhtml idn imagemagick imlib ipod ipv6 isdnlog jabber java javascript joystick jpeg kde lcms libg ++ libwww mad matroska mikmod mmx mmxext mng motif mp3 mpeg ncurses nls no-helper nptl nsplugin ogg opengl openssh oscar oss p am pcmcia pcre pdflib perl php png pppd python qt3 qt4 quicktime rdesktop readline real reflection reiser4 reiserfs samba sdl session slp spell spl sse sse2 sse3 ssl stream subtitles svg svga tcpd theora tiff truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts udev un icode usb v4l v4l2 vorbis wifi win32codecs wmf xine xinerama xml xml2 xmms xorg xscreensaver xv xvid zlib userland_GNU kernel_ linux elibc_glibc" Unset: CTARGET, INSTALL_MASK, LDFLAGS, LINGUAS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS
Can you please give a try to the 0.99.5_pre we have in tree? The behaviour *might* have been fixed, but if not it would be useful to know .
Yes, the bug still exists with 0.99.5_pre20060716.
