If emacs is installed, but USE="-emacs", gpm tries to compile its emacs macro.
Sigh... - stable gpm still has USE=emacs and emacs dependency causing the circular dep in Bug 99533 - unstable gpm has a bogus USE=emacs that doesn't do anything useful and incomplete emacs support (it's partly commented out in the ebuild) is built automagically instead...
it isnt partially commented out, it's totally disabled ... you missed this part of the ebuild: emake EMACS=:
1) emerges fine 2) passes collision test 3) passes test suite 4) links emerges fine on it, mouse works there... Let the wave go over it...
