Check that you did not run out of disk space. If you have enough space there, re-emerge kdelibs and try again.
Had 80Gb free so don't think it was a space issue ;-) I was going to re-emerge kdelibs as suggested, but QT got updated as part of world, so I believe that kdelibs may have been done automagically. It took a whole day to compile, but it works. Thanks Jakub.
