Description Pat Double 2006-06-23 08:36:37 UTC
The fglrx module is not compiled with SMP support on SMP machines.

I am having this problem on an SMP kernel with x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.25.18.
In Xorg.0.log I get:

(II) fglrx(0): Kernel Module Version Information:
(II) fglrx(0): Name: fglrx
(II) fglrx(0): Version: 8.25.18
(II) fglrx(0): Date: May 18 2006
(II) fglrx(0): Desc: ATI FireGL DRM kernel module
(II) fglrx(0): Kernel Module version matches driver.
(II) fglrx(0): Kernel Module Build Time Information:
(II) fglrx(0): Build-Kernel UTS_RELEASE: 2.6.16-suspend2-r6
(II) fglrx(0): Build-Kernel MODVERSIONS: no
(II) fglrx(0): Build-Kernel __SMP__: no
(II) fglrx(0): Build-Kernel PAGE_SIZE: 0x1000

If I use the make.sh from ATI I get:

(II) fglrx(0): Kernel Module Version Information:
(II) fglrx(0): Name: fglrx
(II) fglrx(0): Version: 8.25.18
(II) fglrx(0): Date: May 18 2006
(II) fglrx(0): Desc: ATI FireGL DRM kernel module
(II) fglrx(0): Kernel Module version matches driver.
(II) fglrx(0): Kernel Module Build Time Information:
(II) fglrx(0): Build-Kernel UTS_RELEASE: 2.6.16-suspend2-r6
(II) fglrx(0): Build-Kernel MODVERSIONS: yes
(II) fglrx(0): Build-Kernel __SMP__: yes
(II) fglrx(0): Build-Kernel PAGE_SIZE: 0x1000

Notice MODVERSIONS and __SMP__ are both "yes" in the later case, matching my
kernel. This is causing problems for me. Using suspend2 I have very few problems when __SMP__ is "yes", I have got up to 14 suspend/resume cycles. With __SMP__ "no" 3 is doing good before it crashes on the atomic copy which is when the driver is called to suspend. I am not sure of possible other problems related to this.

ati-drivers-smp.patch

Patch to include MODFLAGS and make vars that ATI provided make.sh does so that SMP and MODVERSIONS support is detected correctly.
Comment 2 Pat Double 2006-06-29 07:39:41 UTC
BTW, the patch does apply cleanly to the 8.26.18 ebuild.
Comment 3 Pat Double 2006-09-04 06:31:07 UTC
Is there something in particular keeping this bug from being resolved? It is a simple patch and applies to ati-drivers 8.28.8.
Comment 4 Pat Double 2006-11-03 09:47:31 UTC
The patch does apply to 8.30.3, yet this still has not been commited nor any reason given why it is not.

The fact that is incorrect is enough to not resolve it. Upstream should fix the build Makefile themself instead of depending on scripts.

And waiting till next month for the next release (if it does get fixed then) is a good idea? This bug blocks hardware opengl on xorg 7.2.
Comment 7 Bill Good 2007-01-27 22:48:13 UTC
Disregard that last comment, I was in the wrong tab.
Comment 8 Scott Price 2007-01-31 15:05:00 UTC
I have verified this on my Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro. It is a major blocker for me because it stops s2ram from working. If I use the ebuild, the computer resets immediately when coming out of sleep. If I use the direct installer it some out of sleep perfectly.

ati-driver version 8.33.6 for both the ebuild and the direct installer.

This should be fixed in 8.34.8. Closing this bug, please reopen if this is still an issue in 8.34.8. For the older versions: I plan to drop most of those and use an ebuild based on the 8.34.8 one for 8.28.8 and any others that are still of use. File a separate bug if you need me to get to that in a hurry.
