Description Chris Bruner 2006-06-20 22:59:31 UTC
/usr/share/zoneinfo/EST should be the same as
/usr/share/zoneinfo/Canada/Eastern

/usr/share/zoneinfo/Canada/Eastern gives the correct time.
Comment 1 Jakub Moc (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-06-21 05:34:33 UTC
timezone-data and/or glibc version needed.
Comment 2 Chris Bruner 2006-06-21 10:40:38 UTC
Timezone data is 2006g
glibc is 2.4-r3
Comment 3 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2006-06-21 10:56:41 UTC
please e-mail any such concerns to tz@elsie.nci.nih.gov, they maintain said timezone files
Comment 4 Ken Pizzini 2006-06-22 12:28:49 UTC
Canada/Eastern is *not* the same as EST. EST is standard time year-round, but Canada/Eastern observes daylight saving time. The difference in output is correct (pay attention to the time zone indicator).

Also, it is preferable to choose a city-based zone name (e.g., America/Toronto), which are the canonical names in the tz database, instead of the backward-compatability names (e.g., Canada/Eastern) --- the old names have ambiguity problems that the newer (city-based) names were designed to correct.
