I've got the same exact error, only with Nvidia's binary drivers (tried multiple versions of their drivers, made no difference). A couple things should be noted. For one, when I tried running a plaininstance of X, it worked just fine. So, KDE was the only one to give me crap. Also, for me, xorg kept on restarting over and over. That made it very hard to switch tty's (had to keep hitting ctrl+alt+backspace and hope that xorg wouldn't freeze).

The bug summary should be updated to reflect that this isn't just an ATI problem.

The same issue here with latest nvidia 8762. After updating to xorg-server-1.0.2-r6 my computer completly freeze on startup. So i cannot do anything! Its good, i have backup of my whole gentoo partition.

This should be marked a duplicate of bug #137388. I didn't get as good of an error report like the one in that bug. Thanks to that fact, I ended up trying to compile xorg-server and kdebase again...
