When emerging smbldap-tools, openldap is dependent on cyrus-sasl (when sasl USE flag is set) however, cyrus-sasl configure checks for openldap.

To successfully circumnavigate the problem, you need to compile openldap (2.3.24 r1 ), without sasl in the USE flags; then recompile with sasl set. cyrus-sasl ersion 2.1.21 r2.
