Every time I log in to my KDE desktop, I see one CPU load go to 95% and stay there until an error announcement appears: Error - artsmessage Sound server fatal error: cpu overload, aborting. $ emerge --info Portage 2.1_rc1-r2 (default-linux/amd64/2006.0, gcc-3.4.6, glibc-2.4-r3, 2.6.16-gentoo-r7 x86_64) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.16-gentoo-r7 x86_64 AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 246 Gentoo Base System version 1.12.0_pre19 ccache version 2.4 [enabled] dev-lang/python: 2.4.3-r1 dev-python/pycrypto: 2.0.1-r5 dev-util/ccache: 2.4-r1 dev-util/confcache: [Not Present] sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.17 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r7 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r2 sys-devel/binutils: 2.16.1-r2 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.22 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.11-r3 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64 ~amd64" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-O2 -march=opteron -mtune=opteron -pipe" CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/env /usr/kde/3.5/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/shutdown /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/share/X11/xkb /usr/share/config /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/X11/xdm/Xservers /etc/eselect/compiler /etc/fonts /etc/gconf /etc/rc.d /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/rsync /etc/terminfo /etc/wget /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -march=opteron -mtune=opteron -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig buildpkg ccache distlocks metadata-transfer sandbox sfperms strict usersandbox" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.blueyonder.co.uk http://ftp.easynet.nl/mirror/gentoo http://trumpetti.atm.tut.fi/gentoo/ ftp://sunsite.informatik.rwth-aachen.de/pub/Linux/gentoo http://ftp.uni-erlangen.de/pub/mirrors/gentoo http://distfiles.gentoo.org http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo" LANG="en_GB.ISO-8859-15" LC_ALL="en_GB.ISO-8859-15" LINGUAS="en_GB" MAKEOPTS="-j5" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages/packages.kde" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --delete-after --stats --timeout=180 --exclude='/distfiles' --exclude='/local' --exclude='/packages'" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage /usr/local/overlays/vmware" SYNC="rsync://gate.prhnet/gentoo-portage" USE="amd64 X alsa arts avi bash-completion berkdb bitmap-fonts bzip2 cairo cdr cli crypt cups directfb dri dvd eds emboss encode fam fbcon foomaticdb fortran gif gimp gimpprint gphoto2 gpm gstreamer gtk gtk2 hal imlib ipv6 isdnlog ithreads java javascript jpeg kde kdeenablefinal libcaca lzw lzw-tiff mp3 mpeg ncurses nls nptl nptlonly nsplugin nvidia ogg opengl pam pcre pdflib perl png ppds pppd python qt quicktime readline reflection scanner sdl session sox spell spl ssl tcpd tiff truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts unicode usb userlocales vorbis wmf xorg xpm xv zlib elibc_glibc input_devices_keyboard input_devices_mouse kernel_linux linguas_en_GB userland_GNU video_cards_nv video_cards_nvidia" Unset: ASFLAGS, CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, INSTALL_MASK, LDFLAGS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS $ qpkg -v -I arts kde-base/arts-3.5.2 * $ qpkg -v -I alsa media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.11 * media-sound/alsa-headers-1.0.11 * media-sound/alsa-utils-1.0.11 * $ lsmod | grep snd snd_pcm_oss 49952 0 snd_mixer_oss 16064 1 snd_pcm_oss snd_seq_dummy 3332 0 snd_seq_oss 32448 0 snd_seq_midi_event 7232 1 snd_seq_oss snd_seq 54208 5 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event snd_via82xx 25576 0 gameport 12688 1 snd_via82xx snd_ac97_codec 103768 1 snd_via82xx snd_ac97_bus 2560 1 snd_ac97_codec snd_pcm 85448 3 snd_pcm_oss,snd_via82xx,snd_ac97_codec snd_timer 21768 2 snd_seq,snd_pcm snd_page_alloc 9360 2 snd_via82xx,snd_pcm snd_mpu401_uart 7040 1 snd_via82xx snd_rawmidi 23072 1 snd_mpu401_uart snd_seq_device 7824 4 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_rawmidi snd 53064 11 snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_via82xx,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_mpu401_uart,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device soundcore 8608 1 snd The sound hardware is in the VIA chipset of this MSI K8T Master2 FAR motherboard and uses the via82xx module. The problem only started when I made a fresh intsallation of KDE 3.5.2 on this box; previous versions worked fine. I reinstalled because of the libexpat bug, which I could not cure with revdep-rebuild.
