if a non-root user tries to install a dictionary extension, thunderbird says that the installation was successful, but actually the installation failed. thunderbird tries to install the dictionary into /opt/thunderbird/components/myspell and because a normal user has no rights to write into this directory, the installation fails silently. Either: 1) make this directory user writable or 2) check LINGUAS env variable during installation and install the proper dictionaries automatically or 3) find a way to let thunderbird install dictionaries in a local folder Currently most users from the forum found a woraround with solution 1)
