Description Stefano 2006-04-25 12:35:42 UTC
Since downgrading from ~x86 baselayout init scripts to x86, I have the following errors during boot:

[...]

udevd-event[1759]: find_free_number: %e is deprecated, will be removed and is unlikey to work correctly. Don't use it.

[...]

* Setting system clock using the hardware clock [Local Time] ...
udevd-event[6423]: match_rule: MODALIAS is deprecated, use ENV{MODALIAS} or SYSFS{modalias} instead.
udevd-event[6423]: udev_rules_apply_format: $modalias is deprecated, use $env{MODALIAS} or $sysfs{modalias} instead.      [ ok ]

My emerge info:

Comment 4 Wilson M. Michaels 2006-05-02 06:00:09 UTC
I also see this bug. There is an active bug in Debian #359978 that seems to be a duplicate of this problem. In Debian the file /etc/udev/rules.d/cd-aliases.rules seems to be the source of the problem. The bug appears to come from /etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev.rules in Gentoo. I have no idea how to fix it.
Comment 5 Stefano 2006-05-02 06:08:38 UTC
I would add (but could be unrelated) that at shutdown udev complains that it's unable to rm devices, because the filesystem is read-only
Comment 6 Grégoire Favre 2006-05-02 15:15:56 UTC
For me the problem appeared when upgrading from 079-r1 to 087.

%e is deprecated, so you can use %n in the /etc/udev/rules/50-udev.rules file, like the following:

ENV{ID_CDROM}=="?*",            SYMLINK+="cdrom%n", GROUP="cdrom"
ENV{ID_CDROM_CD_RW}=="?*",      SYMLINK+="cdrw%n"
ENV{ID_CDROM_DVD}=="?*",        SYMLINK+="dvd%n"
ENV{ID_CDROM_DVD_R}=="?*",      SYMLINK+="dvdrw%n"

works for me.
but should'n this be handled by etc-update?
Comment 12 DEMAINE Benoît-Pierre, aka DoubleHP 2006-05-13 09:57:37 UTC
(In reply to comment #11)

that would when an update of the file is proposed by some update :)
either by ebuild (patch ?) or new different 50-udev.rules in vanilla package.

# equery b /etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev.rules
[ Searching for file(s) /etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev.rules in *... ]
sys-fs/udev-090 (/etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev.rules)

*but*

root@moon_gen:/var/log/portage# grep -nri "/etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev.rules" *
root@moon_gen:/var/log/portage# ls |grep udev
3597-udev-086.log

3688-udev-086.log
3688-udev-087.log
3785-udev-087.log
3785-udev-089-r2.log

3948-udev-090.log
3949-udev-089-r2.log
3949-udev-090.log

so ... is sys-fs/udev really owner of this file ?

I can confirm, that when there is something plugged-in (like USB stick), the udev complains that it cannot remove /dev/<something>/.failed (I don't remember exactly now). When I do not have my USB stick plugged-in, no error message appears.

This solution (changing %e for %n) totally works, havent found any errors so far by applying this.

Am also noticing a "intelfb: Cannot reserve FB region" along with the find_free_number errors. This started showing up when jumped from stable to testing version of udev.
Comment 19 Greg Kroah-Hartman (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-08-30 21:17:01 UTC
This is fixed in the latest version of udev.
