Description Congtat Cia 2006-04-22 08:21:52 UTC
app-office/openoffice-2.0.2-r2 fails to compile. It is reproducible despite CFLAGS settings.

same problem .. dies in the first 50 minutes of the compile same error

also openoffice-2.0.2-r1 fails same way for me,

openoffice-2.0.2 has compiled fine at least 3 or 4 times on my machines so the problem appears to be due to badly applied patches perhaps? I am currently recompiling openoffice-2.0.2 again just to be sure and am about 2 hours into the process. I'll post the final result later.

Are you sure it is the exact same error / same place and not just the same error number?

That would be a miracle ;) as 2.0.2 and 2.0.2-r2 are actually 100% identical atm, both using the same patch revision. So either the cause of your problem is something like not enough diskpace / ram or faulty hardware or you have to have changed something in between...
Comment 3 Derk W te Bokkel 2006-04-22 17:04:49 UTC
If the -r2 suffix is meaningless then why is it issued .. Duh read changelog
It does represent some kind of change as it does not compile the same way for whatever mysterious reason

Compile is now 2 hours and 15 minutes away from completing the openoffice-2.0.2 compile.

By the way the two machines openoffice-2.0.2-r2 failed on both have 1 Gb of memory and working disk space of approximately 7.5 to 9 Gb available. A reboot and purge of files did not help.

for a compile started on the other machine 7.4 Gb available (post compile failure) I have also just started a "normal ooo-2.0.2" (non-suffixed) compile on it we'll see (sorry I'm a skeptic on this one as this hardware has been very reliable in the past)

The last failed compile .. yeah it does seem to fault in a different place but the caller is always "dl-minimal.c"

Well the first machine started completed the openoffice-2.0.2 compile .. the other failled , it might be suffering from low free memory as it has many users .. so I'll take it offline tonight and try again.

I'll also try another round of trying to install version -r2 on the machine that worked and see what happens .. curiousity and all ..

My last sucessful Ooo-2.0.2 compilation was on Apr 5, but downgrading the "MY_PV" variable to smaller numbers still comes up with the same error messages. It looks like that some changes during these days cause the problem.
Comment 7 Derk W te Bokkel 2006-04-23 10:59:18 UTC
wierd .. one machine will compile openoffice-2.0.2 only not openoffice-2.0.2-r2 the other won't compile either version .. mystery
Comment 8 Patrick McLean gentoo-dev 2006-04-27 06:41:58 UTC
I am getting this on an image here, though I have no problems with it on a different image on the same machine.

The only thing close that shows up with "equery list icu " is:

dev-java/icu4j-3.0

and it is on both machines

FYI Note: somehow or other the OOO_2_0_2-core.tar.bz2 digest has changed I'm getting downl;oad failures on this now.

Hmm, so this doesn't seem to be the problem here. Just another wild guess: Could it be that your linker cache is broken? You could try to run ldconfig and see if that helps.

Comment 13 Congtat Cia 2006-05-06 23:56:03 UTC
Emerge openoffice succeeded today. No hardware change during these days, so something updated in the past week fixed the problem.

@Derk, Patrick: Could you please check, if that is true for you, too?
Comment 15 Derk W te Bokkel 2006-05-08 16:14:33 UTC
still no joy and of course since openoffice-2.0.2 disappeared from portage recently, I can't test against it any more...

both machines are unable to compile openoffice-2.0.2-r2 .. :(
(fortunately they both have previous compiles of openoffice-2.0.2 working on them but it would be nice to figure out what's wrong so I could update freely)
Comment 16 Derk W te Bokkel 2006-05-08 16:18:40 UTC
hi do you have the exact old ebuild for openoffice-2.0.2 available somewhere? I'd like to place it into my local portage tree for testing purposes.
Comment 17 Derk W te Bokkel 2006-05-08 18:19:21 UTC
okay I remembered that an ebuild copy is stored in /var/db/ however I noticed on making the digest that it pulled in two additional files ..

cli_types_bridgetest.dll, cli_types.dll .. any idea why the older 2.0.2 version used these files and the newer ones do not?

I'm running cuurently another test compile of openoffice-2.0.2 for reference.
Comment 18 Andreas Proschofsky (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-05-08 22:24:48 UTC
@Derk: Both files are part of the mono-support, if you create a digest you have to download all files, even if you haven't set the according use-flag.

Besides that, again: openoffice 2.0.2 and 2.0.2-r2 are 100% identical, trying 2.0.2 is a waste of time, believe me
Comment 19 Derk W te Bokkel 2006-05-09 03:03:13 UTC
Well openoffice-2.0.2 compiles on this machine everytime .. openoffice-2.0.2-r2 does not every time this I've reproduced at least a half dozen times over the time since I first reported/commented on this bug. so something is really odd or is different somewhere .. If what you say is true both should work .. now how do we go about finding out why?
Comment 20 Derk W te Bokkel 2006-05-09 03:44:06 UTC
I had a thought .. the machines on which this is occurring have longer names for their PORTAGE_TMPDIR .. so I've found another large area and named it with a much shorter name and I am trying the compile again .. It maybe that with such long name spaces that we are falling over an environment limit at the point of failure sporadicly .. a -r2 suffix may be all it takes to break the build on my machines in this situation.
Comment 21 Hanno Zysik (geki) 2006-05-09 03:52:17 UTC
Hm, besides your long PORTAGE_TMPDIR variable I recommend you to resync portage tree and to update glibc to glibc-2.4-r2.
Comment 22 Derk W te Bokkel 2006-05-09 13:46:54 UTC
Jackpot .. success .. already was at glibc-2.4-r2 previous compiles without PORTAGE_TMPDIR change were still failing so that was not the problem. Test was done on the machine with the longest directory names first. Now to test the other.

Comment 23 Derk W te Bokkel 2006-05-10 10:16:28 UTC
okay the other compiled cleanly as well .. seems we have solved it for some.

The original reporter also used a longer than default PORTAGE_TMPDIR name.

The default is /var/tmp 8 characters
His was 12 characters long

mine were 15 and 17 characters long

but that does not explain Patricks problem based on his "emerge --info" below as he's using a standard /var/tmp configuration
Comment 24 Juergen Rose 2006-05-12 00:47:22 UTC
I have a similar problem for some weeks on two machines. I get
mkdir ../test/testdata/out/build
ICU_DATA=../data/out/build LD_LIBRARY_PATH=../common:../i18n:../tools/toolutil:../layout:../layoutex:../extra/ustdio:../tools/ctestfw:../data/out:../data:../stubdata/:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH  ../tools/genpname/genpname -d ../data/out/build
Inconsistency detected by ld.so: dl-minimal.c: 137: realloc: Assertion `new == ptr' failed!
make[2]: *** [../data/out/build/icudt26l_pnames.icu] Error 127

This happens with my default gcc which is hardened and with vanilla-gcc.

PORTAGE_TMPDIR has the default value "/var/tmp"
glibc is glibc-2.4-r2 and was compiled with compiled with vanilla gcc.
dev-libs/icu-3.4 (compiled with hardend and vanilla gcc) qis installed.

The build broke after about 25 minutes.

Bug #130837 mentions, that glibc has some problems, if the build directory, ie. PORTAGE_TMPDIR, is "long"? My PORTAGE_TMPDIR is "/Gentoo/portage/tmp", but that's a symlink and the final directory is "/0b/Gentoo/portage/tmp". Is that too long? It used to be fine for OOo 2.0.2 and with gcc 3.4.6. In this bug, Andreas asked, if icu is installed - on my machine, it isn't.

I find the error message from my problem also in bug #126777 , which is about bad CFLAGS. My CFLAGS are quite conservative, I'd think: "-O2 -march=pentium4 -pipe".

It seems they've got a fix, though:

http://lists.debian.org/debian-openoffice/2005/11/msg00199.html

Or maybe the person who made this backport, just built it in a "shorter" directory?
Comment 34 Patrick McLean gentoo-dev 2006-07-12 11:36:03 UTC
I am still seeing this with OO.o 2.0.3, I actually got 2.0.2 to compile evnetually (unfortunately I don't remember what I did).

The image has dev-libs/icu on it, I am currently trying with it unmerged. I will add myself to the CC so I won't disappear again.
Comment 35 Fabio Coatti 2006-07-13 00:59:20 UTC
I'm seeing a quite random behaviour on two machines with 1Gb of ram. I know that memory in quite low for OO builds, but it worked quite well until 2.0.2-r2. Now every day or two I launch a oo build, after esync, and all the times it stopped with the error that appears here. But during weekend, one machine compiled OO 2.0.3, the other one still fails.
I haven't made any configuration change that can explain the successful build, and I suppose that it is not related to a update in portage tree, due to the fact that one machine still fails.
So I'm supposing some weird bug of gcc or glibc...

I've attached emerge --info for both machines

Comment 39 Andreas Proschofsky (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-08-24 02:51:33 UTC
I've done a little hack in the openoffice-2.0.4_rc1-ebuild to shorten the path, though this is still only a workaround and no proper solution.
Comment 40 Francois Chenier 2006-08-26 17:20:09 UTC
Same problem here with openoffice-2.0.3. Won't compile with
   PORTAGE_TMPDIR=/home/Linux/Portage
   PORTAGE_TMPDIR=/home/portage
but seems to work fine with [now, I need to make more tea!!!]
   PORTAGE_TMPDIR=/home/Q

I can't test with PORTAGE_TMPDIR=/var/tmp; my partition where I store execs & system files is too small to compile openoffice (6GB total / 3GB free)

Thanks for the hint.
Comment 41 Patrick McLean gentoo-dev 2006-08-26 23:27:36 UTC
This is slightly OT, but it can be useful for people encountering this:

> I can't test with PORTAGE_TMPDIR=/var/tmp; my partition where I store execs &

I will try this night. Not finished yet to compile with PORTAGE_TMPDIR=/home/Q.
I had a little problem with broken package python-2.4.3-r2 (released yesterday - missing symbol in libpython-2.4.so) but after reverting back to -r1 my actual status after ~ 5-6 hrs is ...

Could you please file a new bug about the broken python, this might hit a lot of people.

Works. I don't see why is slightly OT because when we bind both directories /home/portage become "transparent" to openoffice. This workaround should work with any path.

Confirming this... the strange thing is that I did have it compiled fine. Now it needs to be reemerged because of a change in the default USE flags: '-mono'. Version 2.0.3.

It seems to works better with version openoffice-2.0.4. More than 50% done and still compiling ... Previously, (without changing PORTAGE_TMPDIR default value) the compilation died after an hour or two.

I had this problem with 2.0.3 too. For me, setting USE='-java' solved the problem.

I could reproduce the problem, and it worked out after disabling sandbox. It seems to have problem with that overlong inside sandbox, really. Does it work out for anyone else here?

I too recieve this error using both portage and paludis. I too have the sandbox feature turned on in portage, but at the moment I am unable to re-emerge without sandbox enabled. I will try later and report back.
