www-client/mozilla-firefox-1.5.0.1-r4 compiles and runs perfectly on my alpha. Please add the ~alpha keyword.
We are having problems running firefox-1.5 on Alpha (namely, it doesn't run). Can you please post your 'emerge --info' ? Cheers, Ferdy

Please leave this bug open for further alpha discussion with firefox-1.5
I tried emerge'ing mozilla-firefox-1.5.0.1-r4 with USE="gnome ipv6 -debug -mozdevelop -xinerama -xprint" and got the following message... Updating firefox chrome registry... /usr/libexec/mozilla-launcher: line 590: regchrome: command not found E: regchrome exited with status: 127 E: //usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/extensions/installed-extensions.txt still present E: Registration might have gone wrong When I tried actually running firefox from a gnome-terminal, the main window never came up. It just said the usual no running windows found stuff and then nothing happened. Even after hitting ctrl+c there were still processes running. Would the warning above have anything to do with it? # emerge --info Portage 2.1_pre7-r4 (default-linux/alpha/no-nptl/2.4, gcc-3.4.4, glibc-2.3.5-r3, 2.4.32 alpha) ================================================================= System uname: 2.4.32 alpha EV56 Gentoo Base System version 1.12.0_pre16 dev-lang/python: 2.3.5, 2.4.2-r1 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.17 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r7 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r2 sys-devel/binutils: 2.16.1-r2 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.22 virtual/os-headers: 2.4.26-r1 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="alpha ~alpha" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="alpha-unknown-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-mieee -pipe -O2 -mcpu=ev56" CHOST="alpha-unknown-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/share/X11/xkb /usr/share/config /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/eselect/compiler /etc/gconf /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/terminfo /etc/texmf/web2c /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-mieee -pipe -O2 -mcpu=ev56" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig collision-protect distlocks metadata-transfer sandbox sfperms strict test" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.mirrored.ca/" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage /usr/portage/local/layman/java-experimental" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="alpha X aac aalib aim alsa apache2 artworkextra async audacious audiofile bash-completion berkdb binfilter bitmap-fonts bittorrent bl bonjour c++ cairo calendar cdinstall cdparanoia cdr cdrom chroot cli config_wizard cracklib crypt cscope csv ctype cups curl curlwrappers cvs cvsgraph dba dhcp dillo dri editor eds elf encode epiphany escreen esd ethereal expat extraicons extras fastbuild ffmpeg fftw figlet firefox flac force-cgi-redirect ftp gd gdb gdbm gif glep gnome gnutls gpm grammar gsl gstreamer gtalk gtk gtk2 gtkspell gvim gzip html icq id3 imlib ipv6 jabber javascript jpeg justify ladspa lame libg++ libsexy libwww lite lj logrotate lua mad mapeditor md5sum memlimit mikmod motif moznoirc moznomail moznoroaming mozsha1 mp3 mpeg mpeg2 mplayer msn msnextras music ncurses net nethack nls offensive ogg oggvorbis opengl openssh openssl oscar oss pam pcre pdflib perl png posix python quicktime quotes readline recode reiserfs scp screen sdl session sftp simplexml skins sndfile soap sockets sounds sox speech spell spl ssl subversion symlink syslog tcpd threads tokenizer truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts userlocales vcd videos vim vim-with-x vorbis wma wma123 xml xml2 xmlreader xmms xsl xv xvid yahoo zip zlib elibc_glibc kernel_linux userland_GNU" Unset: ASFLAGS, CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, INSTALL_MASK, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, LINGUAS

Anarchy thought it might not have worked for me because I had -nptl -nptlonly, so I tried it on a +nptl +nptlonly system. The results were the same, high CPU usage and no windows ever came up. mozilla-firefox-1.5.0.4 is also broken, 100% CPU usage and the browser window never comes up.
(In reply to comment #10) > mozilla-firefox-1.5.0.4 is also broken, 100% CPU usage and the browser window > never comes up. I have the exact same symptons with mozilla-firefox-1.0.8 now, don't think I've upgraded this package to get these symptoms, could it be something else?
This is looking more like a bug in gtk+ and not mozilla itself. could someone maybe try a 2.6.x version of gtk+2?
(In reply to comment #12) > This is looking more like a bug in gtk+ and not mozilla itself. could someone > maybe try a 2.6.x version of gtk+2? I tried downgrading to x11-libs/gtk+-2.8.17, to no avail. Then downgraded to x11-libs/gtk+-2.8.12, but had to take a train before the merge was finished. Remote testing of firefox DOES work now however. I hope xfwm works again also (stopped working at about the same time). Will test further upon request :)
when you can test further please do locally. If this is resolved downgrading gtk then we know you all have a gtk issue in the alpha world and not a mozilla issue at all. Thanks and keep me posted.
After upgrading again to gtk+-2.8.19, I am sorry to see using firefox remotely still works. As such my test was inconclusive. And I won't be able to test locally for almost two weeks, I'm afraid :( Any other alpha-er willing to test this?
Reinstalled x11-libs/gtk+-2.8.12, firefox now seems to run locally as well.

I just managed to get mozilla-firefox-1.5.04 working on the alpha by upgrading to gcc-4.1.1 and glibc-2.4 (I experienced the same hang on startup as described in previous posts). Might be a little extreme, but it also fixes bug 133748. Well, I don't really get what the problem is still because I can't reproduce it. I have upgraded my system a lot recently including upgrading to FireFox 1.5.0.4. Everything still compiles and runs perfectly the same way it did when I started this a long time ago and I'm posting this comment from my alpha right now ;) So yeah, I'm having no problem with 1.5.0.4 Here is my latest emerge --info: Gentoo Base System version 1.6.14 Portage 2.1-r1 (default-linux/alpha/2006.0, gcc-3.3.2, glibc-2.3.5-r3, 2.6.15.1 alpha) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.15.1 alpha EV56 dev-lang/python: 2.3.5, 2.4.2 dev-python/pycrypto: 2.0.1-r5 dev-util/ccache: [Not Present] dev-util/confcache: [Not Present] sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.12 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r6 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r1 sys-devel/binutils: 2.16.1-r3 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.3.12-r6 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.22 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.11-r4 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="alpha" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="alpha-unknown-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-mieee -pipe -O2 -mcpu=ev56" CHOST="alpha-unknown-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/share/X11/xkb" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/env.d /etc/gconf /etc/terminfo" CXXFLAGS="-mieee -pipe -O2 -mcpu=ev56" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig distlocks metadata-transfer sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://ftp.gtlib.gatech.edu/pub/gentoo http://www.gtlib.gatech.edu/pub/gentoo http://gentoo.chem.wisc.edu/gentoo/ ftp://gentoo.chem.wisc.edu/gentoo/" MAKEOPTS="-j3" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --delete-after --stats --timeout=180 --exclude='/distfiles' --exclude='/local' --exclude='/packages'" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.us.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="alpha X alsa apache2 arts berkdb bitmap-fonts cli crypt cups dri eds encode esd foomaticdb fortran gdbm gif gpm gstreamer gtk2 imlib ipv6 isdnlog jpeg libg++ libwww mad mikmod motif mp3 mpeg ncurses nls nptl nptlonly ogg opengl oss pam pcre pdflib perl png pppd python qt3 quicktime readline reflection sdl session spell spl ssl tcpd truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts udev vorbis xml xmms xorg xv zlib elibc_glibc input_devices_keyboard input_devices_mouse input_devices_evdev kernel_linux userland_GNU" Unset: CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, INSTALL_MASK, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, LINGUAS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS, PORTDIR_OVERLAY
I noticed gcc-3.3.2 in Comment #20, so I switched compilers and recompiled firefox-1.5.0.4 and its dependencies with gcc-3.3.2. firefox-1.5.0.4 runs fine now. Also, comment #19 mentions firefox-1.5.0.4 working when compiled with gcc-4.1.1. Since the only thing I changed was the gcc version, I'm assuming this is a gcc-3.4 issue. I think we should be able to re-keyword firefox once gcc-4.1.1 hits ~alpha. Eric and Mike, thank you very much for posting your `emerge --info` as it has helped narrow down the problem. # emerge --info Portage 2.1-r1 (default-linux/alpha/2006.0, gcc-3.3.2, glibc-2.3.5-r3, 2.6.16.19 alpha) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.16.19 alpha EV68AL Gentoo Base System version 1.6.15 dev-lang/python: 2.3.5, 2.4.3-r1 dev-python/pycrypto: 2.0.1-r5 dev-util/ccache: [Not Present] dev-util/confcache: [Not Present] sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.17 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r7 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r1 sys-devel/binutils: 2.16.1-r3 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.3.13-r3 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.22 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.11-r4 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="alpha" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="alpha-unknown-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-pipe -O2 -mcpu=ev67" CHOST="alpha-unknown-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/lib/mozilla/defaults/pref /usr/share/X11/xkb /usr/share/config" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/env.d /etc/gconf /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/terminfo" CXXFLAGS="-pipe -O2 -mcpu=ev67" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs autoconfig buildpkg ccache cvs distlocks metadata-transfer nostrip parallel-fetch sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://cs.ubishops.ca/pub/gentoo/ http://distfiles.gentoo.org/" MAKEOPTS="-j3" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --delete-after --stats --timeout=180 --exclude='/distfiles' --exclude='/local' --exclude='/packages'" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="alpha X aac aim alsa apache2 arts audiofile berkdb bitmap-fonts bzip2 cli crypt cups dlloader eds encode esd flac foomaticdb gdbm gif glut gnome gphoto2 gpm gstreamer gtk gtk2 icq imlib ipv6 isdnlog jabber jpeg kde libg++ libwww lua mad mikmod motif mp3 mpeg msn ncurses nls nocd nptl nptlonly nsplugin offensive ogg oggvorbis openal opengl oscar oss pam pcre pdflib perl png pppd python qt qt3 quicktime readline reflection sdl session shorten sndfile spell spl ssl symlink tcpd truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts udev userlocales vorbis xml xmms xorg xv xvid yahoo zlib elibc_glibc input_devices_keyboard input_devices_mouse input_devices_evdev kernel_linux userland_GNU" Unset: CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, INSTALL_MASK, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, LINGUAS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS
