Same symptoms here, when, after having played a real media file, I close the window.

Comment 4 Karel De Vriendt 2006-04-04 08:47:36 UTC
Additional information: with my versions, I do not have the problem when I do:
Edit --> Preferences -> Privacy
Comment 5 Robin Bankhead 2006-04-05 03:22:30 UTC
Same here. I have found two reproducible instances of this, both apparently triggered by javascript:

1) http://bugs.gentoo.org/ -> Enter a query in the search box and click "show".
Output:
/usr/libexec/mozilla-launcher: line 117: 9151 Segmentation fault "$mozbin" "$@"
firefox-bin exited with non-zero status (139)

2) http://www.rashbel.com/ -> Click the link "See samples of our catalogue" (should open a javascript popup)
Output:
/usr/libexec/mozilla-launcher: line 117: 9192 Segmentation fault "$mozbin" "$@"
firefox-bin exited with non-zero status (139)

In both cases, firefox-bin does not crash if run directly. I have not had any such crashes caused by the Preferences or other program dialogs (yet).

I've had the same bug on a whole host of situations, the same bug doenst occur when running directly, so the problem is either in the launcher itself, or in something it does to firefox. Its very evil and annoying.

And yes, it will even rear its ugly head on a clean profile.

There seems to be no consistent way to cause the problem, but on the contrary, there is a whole host of ways to cause it.

It also is not just firefox, the problem seems to propigate occasionally to mozilla classic, and even odder, epiphany every now and then, which makes me wonder if theres a mozilla plugin somewhere pulling the stunts. so im going to clear all plugins from mozillas vision and see if it helps. If it doesnt, I wont follow this up ;)
Comment 8 Kent Fredric (IRC: kent\n) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-05-21 11:59:45 UTC
Testing confirmed, removing all plugins from the firefox plugin search path seems to fix the segfault issue, at least for me that is.

But the confusing thing is, some of the plugins only foul up when you view the about:plugins page, but actually work for everything else.

A Specific example: when using sun-jdk 1.4's jre plugins, linking the ns610 plugin results in mozilla crashing ( but the crash only occurs when accessing the plug in information, ie: if you open about:plugins ), but linking the ns610-gcc32 plugin does not.

But on the contrary, with sun-jdk 1.5's jre plugins, the ns7/ one works, but the ns7-gcc29/ does not.

List Of Plugins I Found Not to cause death upon loading about:plugins

Comment 9 David Li 2006-07-26 12:24:49 UTC
I've had some bad experiances with mplayerplug-in causing firefox, and there force mozilla-launcher to segfault when compiled with unsafe CFLAGS.

For me, "-ffast-math -ftree-vectorize" must be filtered for mplayerplug-in to stop the segfaults. But then, with CFLAGS like those, you must expect some things to break.

Yeah, I started compiling everything with debug flags, then did a backtrace on what was causing the faults. Seemed almost every one of them was in a gcc-library call somewhere doing fast-math, and after taking -ffast-math out of my cflags for the problematic plugins, found the problem to dissapate, so I suggest package maninatiners for things that firefox calls to "filter" -ffast-math
Comment 11 Stuart Longland (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-09-25 06:01:31 UTC
While -ffast-math is strongly discouraged, and for those who are using it, it won't be helping the issue... looking through the posts here suggests it's not the only factor, as there are people here who don't appear to be using it.

If you're getting problems with -ffast-math, then you deserve what you get... it's not a CFLAG to be meddled with. Simple as that. ;-)

On this note... I'm unable to reproduce the problems described here. Having tried both of Robin's suggestions in Comment #5 I can confirm that searching terms on the Bugzilla homepage doesn't trigger it, nor does viewing Rashbel UK's catalogue (which is loading as I type this).

Can people try an upgrade (without the ricer CFLAGS if you don't mind ;-) and report back?

Thanks.
Comment 12 Mateusz Kotyrba 2006-10-23 11:38:52 UTC
I have the same problem. But mine crashes just after the browser's window appears.

 No running windows found
/usr/libexec/mozilla-launcher: line 117: 18440 Segmentation fault "$mozbin" "$@"
firefox-bin exited with non-zero status (139)

It's independent of firefox version, CFLAGS (I have even compiled it with plane -O2 -pipe, as well as mozilla-firefox). This bug is quite annoying because I have got it for about 6 months, but my No. 1 browser is Opera so I didn't fill the bug report earlier.

everyone having such a problem needs to run /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/firefox-bin and report success of failure. If you get a failure you need to provide an appropriate backtrace so we can figure out what the problem is.

0xb7358c2f in inflateBack () from /lib/libz.so.1
Comment 18 David Li 2006-10-23 18:12:28 UTC
That's not a backtrace. In order to get a backtrace, first do what you did to get the segmentation fault. Then you have to issue the "bt full" command in gdb.
Comment 19 Mateusz Kotyrba 2006-10-23 22:54:18 UTC
so just after segmentation fault I ordered bt full and here is the output:

Please reopen with a backtrace if this is still an issue with 1.5.0.9

Created attachment 112003 [details]
gdb log and backtrace of /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/firefox-bin

Includes the output of executing "run" up until the seg. fault, plus a full backtrace afterwards.
Comment 22 Neal McConachie 2007-03-04 00:33:28 UTC
Ok, a bit of background info:

- mozilla-firefox-bin-2.0.0.2 works fine
- mozilla-firefox-2.0.0.2 seg. faults at line 117 of the mozilla-launcher script
(see the attachment for a backtrace of /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/firefox-bin)
- renaming my ~/.mozilla/ folder doesn't help

- emerge --info (note that this is my default setup - to get that backtrace, I added nostrip to features, and changed my cflags to "-march=athlon64 -01 -pipe -g -gddb", which is not reflected in this emerge --info):
