A oneshot emerge of php-4.4.2 (motivated by the security alert today) shows that it does not by default USE either apache or mysql - which is unlike previous versions where those were used if they were on the system. Should glsa-200603-22.xml be update to discuss this, before it trips people up who don't notice the change? In any case, glsa-200603-22.xml should be updated to fully discuss the php-4 series, for those who don't want to jump to php-5 yet. It currently lists < 4.4.2 as "affected," but fails to list >= 4.4.2 as "unaffected." It then does give the instructions for the upgrade of the php-4 series, but doesn't mention the gotchas: both the USE flag changes and the fact that previous php installations are treated as blockers, requiring unemerging first. # emerge --info Portage 2.1_pre6-r6 (default-linux/x86/2005.0, gcc-3.4.4, glibc-2.3.5-r2, 2.6.15-gentoo-r1Y i586) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.15-gentoo-r1Y i586 AMD-K6(tm) 3D processor Gentoo Base System version 1.6.14 dev-lang/python: 2.2.3-r6, 2.3.5-r2, 2.4.2 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.12 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r6 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r1 sys-devel/binutils: 2.16.1 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.22 virtual/os-headers: 2.4.19-r1, 2.6.11-r2 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="i586-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-march=k6-2 -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -funroll-loops -pipe" CHOST="i586-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/X11/xkb /usr/share/config /var/bind /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-march=k6-2 -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -funroll-loops -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig distlocks metadata-transfer sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://distfiles.gentoo.org http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/gentoo" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 X alsa apache apm arts avi berkdb bitmap-fonts crypt cups dri eds emboss encode foomaticdb fortran gdbm gif gpm gstreamer gtk gtk2 imlib ipv6 jpeg kde libg++ libwww mad mbox mikmod motif mp3 mpeg mysql ncurses nls ogg oggvorbis opengl oss pam pdflib perl png python qt quicktime readline sdl spell ssl tcpd truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts vorbis xml2 xmms xv zlib elibc_glibc kernel_linux userland_GNU" Unset: ASFLAGS, CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, LINGUAS, MAKEOPTS, PORTDIR_OVERLAY
This has nothing to do with php, check your default profile use flags and set them accordingly if you need additional ones.
