Upgraded to gentoo-sources-2.6.15-r4 from 2.6.15-r2 using the same .config file. ati-drivers re-emerged. 

Now X fails to load. No core pointer found. Xorg.0.log reported that my mouse is configured as keyboard.

Revert to gentoo-sources-2.6.15-r2, the problem just go away.
