I can also reproduce that bug on athlon-xp machine.

#emerge -pv skype

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild R ] net-im/skype-1.2.0.21-r1 USE="static -arts -esd" 0 kB

Total size of downloads: 0 kB

Steps to reproduce:
1. emerge skype (USE="static -arts -esd" ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86")
2. try to start skype
Comment 1 Sven 2006-01-31 16:50:26 UTC
The problem is the static USE-flag. The ebuild is faulty and always downloads the RPM for mandrake, in other words: a version dynamically linked against QT.

There is no statically compiled skype 1.2.0.21 on the skype-homepage :-(
So the ebuild cannot be fixed easily.
Comment 2 Zeno Davatz 2006-02-02 09:45:31 UTC
Very sad. Then I will go back to Version 1.2.0.18. Thanks for the Info!

Comment 3 Espen Rønnevik 2006-02-12 10:53:03 UTC
i have experienced the same problem, although Im not use the static USE flag. Trying to run the binary manually makes skype spit out the following errormessage:

./skype.bin: error while loading shared libraries: libqt-mt.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I'm not use QT on my system, so Im guess this is a dependency issue?
Comment 4 Ernestas Liubarskij 2006-02-23 14:05:15 UTC
I think you should remove Skype-1.2.0.21-r1 from the Portage tree because this version is _only_ fixing a bug in Mandriva's RPM package (that's why v1.2.0.21 is released _only_ for Mandriva)!

from http://www.skype.com/products/skype/linux/changelog.html :

09.01.2006 Skype for Linux 1.2.0.21 (Mandriva only)

    * bugfix: RPM packaging issues that were preventing proper installations
Comment 5 Xake 2006-02-25 10:09:49 UTC
Can confirm this bug. Does only appere if qt is not merged and it does not want to merge qt no matter what my USE-flags are.
Comment 6 Olliver Schinagl 2006-03-04 06:19:09 UTC
Also confirming, 1.2.0.21 no longer works. ldd-ing /opt/skype/skype.bin does indeed list qt.so (which is obivously missing) so a non-static version got installed.

I masked it for myself for the time being.
Comment 7 Martin Mokrejš 2006-03-22 10:29:39 UTC
Per comment #3: I have similar problem. I am on ~x86 and I have qt4. It seems no libqt-mt.so is available with qt4, don't ask me why. Maybe look at the bug #127201.
Comment 8 Ernestas Liubarskij 2006-03-22 10:47:05 UTC
This version should be hard masked or even removed from portage tree (see comment #4), please downgrade to 1.2.0.18. I wonder why isn't this done yet (or will someone properly explain why it should be in portage, if this version is only for mandriva and causes only lots of problems for gentoo users).
Comment 9 Zeno Davatz 2006-03-22 11:21:34 UTC
Also the Version 1.2.0.18 from Gentoo emerge does not work for me. Only the Version from Skype.com with the compiled-in QT works for me. My system info is:

Did you set static USE flag for skype? If yes, what error message or smth. produces skype when you try to start it from the shell?
Comment 11 Zeno Davatz 2006-03-22 11:35:46 UTC
It gave me some kind of segmentation fault and some Skype variables. At the moment I'm running on the Skype.com package with compiled in QT so it must be the QT-Version I guess.

I have to add that before I upgraded my system with "emerge world" (and that included my gcc and QT) everything worked fine on my Gentoo-Emerge-Skype-1.2.0.18.

If I find some time I will reinstall the Gentoo package and try again. But in any case compare you system to mine in terms of GCC and QT Version.

Thanks for your help.
Comment 12 Ernestas Liubarskij 2006-03-26 00:23:03 UTC
I haven't QT installed. You have to set "static" use flag for skype if you want to use skype with compiled-in QT. I think skype has nothing to do with GCC, because it is binary package, you can't compile it yourself.
Comment 13 Martin Mokrejš 2006-03-29 10:58:40 UTC
Per my comment #7, shouldn't skype when not "static" is set depend on x11-libs/qt-3? qt is slotted so qt3 and qt4 can coexist concurrently, it seems.
Comment 14 Norman Warthmann 2006-04-03 05:40:22 UTC
hi there,

I can report similar things using skype 1.2.0.18 in KDE 3.4 with alsa drivers; I have compiled skype first "-static" afterwards with "+static" and I have the same behaviour as comments #9 and #11. it starts in artsd wrapped mode, I can call people and hear the ringing but as soon as they answer the call (or echo123 comes) it crashes on me, automatically restarts in not wrapped mode, then of course it does not crash, but I can neither hear not speak. it also happens no matter if I enable/disable full duplex mode
