Starting tuxracer out of the box gives an error message saying that a directory
/usr/share/games/tuxracer isn't found. Workaround: create this file as a
symbolic link pointing to /usr/share/tuxracer.

i just emerged 0.61-r2 and ran it without a problem 
 
all the files were installed into /usr/share/tuxracer 
running `strings` on tuxracer and grepping for 'share' showed /usr/share/tuxracer ...

I'm not at home this week. So I can't access my gentoo PC now. I'll try find

Sorry, my fault. I'm sharing my home directory between my debain and my gentoo
linux installation. The file ~/.tuxracer/options was originally created by
debian. This options file set tuxracers data_dir to /usr/share/games/tuxracer.
