Description Guy 2005-12-25 06:30:37 UTC
I'm having the same problem as in bug # 116445. Since I'm not the reporter or assignee, I can't reopen it.

I've got two systems down with not being able to see my network. I haven't yet brought the other systems up to the same level. Both systems are set for static IP addresses.

One system is Opteron based and the other system is Athlon XP based.

After rebooting, both systems aborted their network portions looking for a dhcp client. Since no client was found, both systems did not start networking.

Subsequent to this, I've downgraded baselayout to 1.11.13-r3 on the Opteron based system.

With MODULES="iproute2", I get a message during network startup:

RTNETLINK answers: Invalid argument.

With MODULES="ifconfig", I don't get any error messages during network startup. When I try to ping another address on my network, I get:

connect: network is unreachable.

HOWEVER - in both cases, I get the desired IP address twice. i.e. /etc/init.d/net.eth0 start tries to start the static ip address twice.

I'm still trying a variety of things so I hope to have more information later today.

Notes:

Both PCs also have vmware installed.
Both had their versions of vmware upgraded to the latest available.

I can't provide the results of "emerge info" yet because I need to copy the results to CD and then load them on this workstation to upload them to here. I will be doing that later. However, you can take it as granted that I have the latest available of everything. I have almost no packages which are hardmasked.

Things I'll be trying:

I still need to finish downgrading baselayout on the Athlon XP based system.

I'll be downgrading vmware on both systems as well.

If you tell me how to obtain the information, I'll be happy to get whatever further information you need.

BTW - Happy holidays! ;-D

you neglected to post `emerge info`
Comment 2 Roy Marples (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-12-29 11:23:39 UTC
Don't use bash-3.1 or bash-3.1-r1 with baselayout
Comment 3 Guy 2005-12-29 11:51:44 UTC
I couldn't provide the results of 'emerge info' on my AMD64 because I 1) couldn't access my network and 2) couldn't write to my CD-Writer {unresolved problem I'm trying to track down}.

I'm currently on my AMD64 PC as I write this. I downgraded baselayout and vmware to get back to a state where everything works once again.

I'm still putting my Athlon-XP PC back together. Will post the same type info for that later.

As requested:

You now that you have bash-3.0 installed, I'm sure that this bug no longer applies. You've stated that you have downgraded baselayout back to 1.11 - maybe try 1.12 again?

You are correct. I've brought everything back up to the latest available releases including vmware-workstation.

Apparenetly, bash-3.1 also breaks the vmware virtual ethernet initialization scripts too. :-( Hence the confusion.

Thank you very much!
