Simply installing gamin (as recommended) instead of fam doesn't seem to work:
gam_server never gets started. You need to install fam first, but because it's a
blocker for gamin, you then need to remove it again. THEN you can emerge gamin.

You also need to resist the urge to remove the leftover files once fam is
unemerged, such as /etc/init.d/famd.

I know this is a problem on AMD64; not sure about other arches.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.
2.
3.

Works fine here with just installing gamin from the start. Not sure how you did
it or what to suggest to get to the bottom of the issue .. maybe elaborating on
how exactly you did the setup would help.

Yeah, sorry, I think I was wrong about this. I know there are a couple of people
with this problem (gamin not working), but what I thought was the solution
(installing & removing fam) turned out not to be.

The relevent forum thread is here:

Try to remerge gnome-vfs and nautilus.

Did that, and now it works. Excellent, thanks.
