Description Walter Meinl 2005-11-16 12:34:35 UTC
Now after the upstream fixes of xdm I come a bit closer to X, but cannot
finalize the login process. The wellcome screen is shown, after logging in it
shortly disappears and then reappers. Also the log console is missing. Here is
my xdm.log:
This is a pre-release version of the X server from The X.Org Foundation.

As you can see, it doesn't find required files. When I remove the
gentoo_locations-0.99.3.patch from the ebuild xdm works (however then several
files go to /usr/lib/X11/xdm that formerly were installed in /etc/X11/xdm.

can you run `equery files xdm` please?
Comment 2 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-11-16 13:17:24 UTC
Josh, I seem to recall mentioning that a number of the files moved to
/usr/lib/X11/xdm should stay there because they're scripts, not configuration
files. But I see that they've been moved back to /etc.

Hmm, I don't recall that, sorry. Is the patch-less behaviour what you were
intending?
Comment 5 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-11-16 18:57:48 UTC
I would intend that xdm-run scripts go in /usr/lib/X11/xdm and configuration
files go in /etc. If that's not how it works, please change it.
Comment 6 Joshua Baergen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-11-16 20:13:28 UTC
Alright, patch is dropped. Locations should be correct now; give it a try.
Comment 7 Joshua Baergen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-11-16 20:14:10 UTC
Oh, for clarity, the patch is dropped in -r1.

Build and runs fine, thanks. Just two question remaining: When I cleaned my
/etc/X11/xdm directory I found a left-over authdir directory, that is neither
created in /etc/X11/xdm nor in /usr/lib/X11/xdm as you see in my equery outputs.
Could it be from an older xdm? Obviously its not needed, as I could start xdm
now also after removing the authdir directory. Second thing is probably for
upstream. During run of configure I've seen the statement "XDM_LDFLAG" command
not found. Didn't hurt either but just to mention it.
From my side feel free to close the bug, thanks again

Ok, the authdir is created at runtime by xdm, so everything is fine :-))
Comment 10 Joshua Baergen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-11-27 11:00:14 UTC

Ya, this is an upstream issue, but not currently fatal as far as I can tell.
Might just be a common autotools issue.

I'll close this bug, but I think some of these script paths are being disputed
upstream so don't be surprised if they change again.
