I can't get the 2005.1 install CD to work with my new PowerBook5,8 due to the kernel not detecting any IDE controllers on the system. BenH suggested to use the attached patch but since I don't have a working Linux/PPC system I can't test it. If a experimental / development version of live CD incorporates this patch I am willing to test it. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot Live CD 2005.1 2. Installer complains no bootable medium 3. Actual Results: Should have installed the distro from the CDROM on the system to the hard drive Expected Results: Both CDROM and Hard-drive are not detected due to missing detection for IDE Controller Happens on new (post Oct 19 2005) revision PowerBooks.

That means we need an experimental CD with an additionally patched kernel. I can't give an ETA for such a CD, but waiting for the 2006.0 release would be too far in the future.

Yep, people are already on top of it and we are expecting a Install CD with minimum required PowerBook5,8 support (AGP, Ethernet, IDE) soon! http://gentooexperimental.org/~pylon/ISOs/ Please test and let us know if you have problems. Thank you Pylon for getting this ready so quickly.
The patch merged upstream also adds support for more of the new components http://www.kernel.org/git/gitweb.cgi?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commitdiff;h=7fce260a6bf75080ef61408504add5618f90e41b
Just wanted to confirm that it's indeed resolved and I am running Gentoo 2005.1 successfully on the new PowerBook 5,8. Thanks.
So we should include that patch in gentoo-sources
The only change between the git-diff and the diff I used is the addition of PowerBook 5,9. I can't say, if that patch works, as I didn't got any reply to the ISO I created. There was one ISO with a messed up yaboot.conf, but I fixed it some hours later. But none of the testers in #gentoo-ppc replied and stated that the CD boots up their new machines.
According to http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-396455.html the CD works. It was a yaboot-config-error. So, it's very welcome to hear you want to include the patch into gentoo-sources. At the moment, users can boot from the CD but must patch the kernel themselves for booting from harddisk.
This evening I met a friend who recently bought a new PowerBook. He told me that he could not boot the Ubuntu CD and I gave him my CD with a big grin ;-) So I saw with my own eyes, that the CD works and the harddisk is accessable.
Fixed in gentoo-sources-2.6.14-r3 (genpatches-2.6.14-4)
This bug could be taken as fixed.
